Age: 5 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard

These doxies are being fostered in the San Diego Area.

These three dachshunds were surrendered to rescue due to domestic violence.  Our hearts go out to their former owner.

Alexia is the one who is curious, confident, quickest to be friendly with people and most energetic.  She likes to talk to you when it is clear she is going for a walk.  Throw a rock into shallow pool of water and she will chase it and hunt for it.

Button is a mellow girl, reserved, and happy to sleep in her favorite spot.  She needs a little less food and a little more exercise, and LOVES to play with a ball.  She is a lap-cuddle dog, but only after she gets to know you.  Button is very adaptable, is comfortable with the minimal amount of walks, and would make a good apartment dog.  She only barks when she wants to be picked up.

Cujo loves long walks and running on the beach, playing with his sister Alexia, and getting snuggle time. He relies more on his sister, Alexia, and tends to follow her and wants to be near her.  Once he knows you, Cujo is the one who is quickest to claim your lap, and will follow you around the house.  He will bark, but does stop when you say "no bark".  He is a bit cautious in new situations, but adjusts quickly once he feels safe.

All three dogs have wonderful house manners, walk well on a leash, are crate trained, travel easily, and are able to use a doggy door.  They love sleeping together in a puppy pile, and are used to being crated together.  These dogs have been in lots of different living situations, including living on 20 acres of property, traveling on business with their owner, and staying in hotels.  All know the commands Come, Kennel, Get Down, Jump Up.  These three would not be good with young children, but they are okay with older children.  They are great with men and women both, and are good with other little dogs.  Alexia is a little too interested in cats, and what Alexia does, Cujo tends to emulate, but Button seems to be okay with a dog-tolerant cat.

If you are looking for a doxie or two, this is a great opportunity to get some very very nicely brought up dachshunds.  Button would be fine if separated from Cujo and Alexia.  However, Cujo and Alexia cannot be separated, but if someone is looking for a pair of doxies, they would love to audition for adoption as a pair!

If you are interested in one or two of these doxies, please fill out an application at http://secondchancedogrescue.org/index.php/ai, and email Deb, their foster mom at DebandRick@cox.net.

The adoption fee for each doxie is $175.00.

New!                     Foster Home Needed

Name: Dylan
Age: 12 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 13 lbs.

A sweet, quiet little lady, Dylan came into Rescue with her two adult puppies, both have long since been placed in their own homes.  At first, Dylan was heartbroken, but she has made the best of things.

Dylan has done well in foster care, but circumstances have changed in the home.  Her foster mom had to return to full-time employment and can no longer be at home all day with Dylan, leaving her alone for long periods of time.  Dylan will be happiest in a quiet home with no children, preferably with a retiree or someone who works at home.  She is very sociable with the other dogs, but would not mind being someone’s only little princess.

Although she is in very good health for her age, Dylan has cataracts which she considers only a minor inconvenience.  She doesn’t seem to have any trouble getting around and uses the dog door most of the time.  Because of her limited vision, Dylan needs a home all on one level, with steps that can be easily ramped to make going outside as trouble-free as possible.

Dylan is in good health for her age, current on vaccines, and her few remaining teeth are in good shape.  She eats kibble just fine.  We think Dylan is adorable.

If you are interested in Dylan, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Dylan is on a donation basis.

Name: Zaboo
Age: 3 ½ years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 13 lbs.

Poor Zaboo has been passed around a great deal in his young life.  He lost his first home when he was a year old.  Then his new owner ended up in rehab and Zaboo went to the grandmother's.  During the last two years the family has moved numerous times so Zaboo has never been able to get comfortable anywhere.

Family financial problems also affected Zaboo.  At times his family couldn't afford dog food, so he was fed people food.  Other times they could only afford cheap, low quality dog food.  The lack of good nutrition shows in his coat as it is rough and he has lost hair around his neck and rear.  We expect that after some weeks on a high quality dog food there will be a significant improvement.

However, even with all that Zaboo has been through, he is still a wonderfully sweet tempered dog.  He is a little shy in new situations, but he loves people and seeks out affection.  In his past, he happily lived with a 4 year old child.  He is being fostered with a number of other dogs, and he is getting along with all of them.

He is crate trained and housebroken.  He needs a home that will provide him with the consistency and stability his life has so far lacked.  He also needs a home with people who will take him on a walk every day.

Neutered and current on his vaccinations, Zaboo is ready for his forever home.  If you would like to meet him, please e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Jack is $200.00.

Name: Jake
Age: 4 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 10 lbs.

Jake has spent the last three years of his life living with an elderly owner who was in a significant physical and mental decline.  As a result he had no consistency, no rules, and no exercise.  In the absence of a pack leader, he became hyper-vigilant and reactive to every noise, dog, and person he saw.

Jake is very sweet with people that he knows.  He can get along with other dogs if he is given clear rules that are enforced (i.e. not being allowed to charge another dog).  Jake is now learning social skills, and we have even seen him playing with other doxies occasionally.  Jake is significantly less reactive after only a week in foster care, and he no longer barks at every sound.  Each day he relaxes a little more as he realizes that he no longer has to be in charge.

Jake is a tiny little thing and he loves to be cuddled.  He wants a home without children and where he gets to get out and about.  No more being cooped up the house all day for him!  His ideal home would be with a mellow dachshund buddy, but he would also be a great “only dog”.

Previous experience with a longhaired dachshund would be a big plus, as Jake will need regular brushing to keep his coat looking beautiful.  He is crate trained, but like all doxies, he is dying to sleep in the big bed with his person.  His foster mom is working on his housebreaking, but after three years of eliminating wherever and whenever he wanted, it will take a little more time for her to be able to declare him housebroken.  He's had a recent dental cleaning and he is up to date on his vaccines.

Jake is ready for his forever home. If you would like to meet him, please email Lindy at linla@comcast.net. A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Jake is $200.00.

New!

Name:  Boris
Age: 5 years
Color: Black & Tan Dapple
Coat:  Smooth
Sex:  Male/Neutered
Size:  Mini - 12 lbs.

Name:  Tasha
Age: 3 years
Color:  Red Dapple
Coat:
Smooth
Sex:
Female/Spayed
Size:  Mini – 10 lbs.

Boris and Tasha were rescued from a breeder who could not afford to take care of them.  They spent most of their time outdoors and were only let inside at night to sleep in the laundry room.  They can’t believe they are being allowed in the house any time they want.  It seems so amazing to them.

Boris and Tasha are healthy, well behaved, and crate trained.  They are getting a refresher course in house training.  They need a home with someone who has the experience and patience to continue their house training routine, so they can become reliable in this important area.  They need a home with a dog door and a yard.  They are not apartment dogs.

Boris appears to be an alpha male and needs to be reminded periodically that he is not in charge of the humans in the house.  He likes the female doxies in his foster home, but he loves his Tasha.  They are quite devoted to each other.  He does not, however, do well with other bossy males.  He would be fine in a home with just Tasha and himself or with another female doxie.  He'd love to have a harem.

Boris and Tasha are very friendly toward people and love to be picked up and cuddled.  They could use some leash training so they would not pull so much when going for a walk.  Their vaccinations are all up-to-date, they’ve been microchipped, and they both recently had a dental cleaning.

If you are interested in Boris and Tasha, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Boris and Tasha is $300.00.

Name: Little Jack
Age: 10 months
Color: Black & Tan
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Little Jack came into rescue with his mother who was bred her first heat and was a mother at 9 months.  After observing them, we felt she would do better being separated from Jack.  Jack is adorable, but he hogs all the attention and will push his mother away from humans and toys and treats in order to get everything for himself.  That said, we don't think Jack should be an only dog.  He would do best in a home with another small dog.  He gets along with both male and female dogs.  His current best play buddy is a male dachshund.

Jack's facial markings have led to him being referred to as Eddie Munster and Count Chocula.  His foster home calls him Monkey Man, because Jack can climb!  If a human is standing close to a wall or a piece of furniture, Jack will use the wall/furniture to brace himself against as he climbs up your legs in order to get into your arms.  (Did we mention he likes attention?)

Jack is still very young so he has lots of energy and needs to go for daily walks.  He goes bonkers when the leashes are pulled out.  He is extremely people-friendly and could go to a home with respectful children over the age of 8.  Jack is somewhat “tail challenged”, as he has a stubby half-tail which is a congenital deformity and causes him no problems.

Neutered and current on his vaccinations, Jack is ready for his forever home. Just one look into Jack’s smiling face, and you will lose your heart.  If you would like to meet him, please e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Jack is $300.00.

Puppy

Name: Rudy
Age: 5 months
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 12 lbs.

Rudy is a sweet doxie puppy.  We think one of his parents may have been a mix, probably a bit of Min Pin.  He has short legs, a long body, but Min Pin ears.  His former owners kept him outside 24/7 on a concrete patio with just a ratty blanket for protection against the elements, no shade, no dog house, no crate, or even a dog bed.  When they had to move, lucky for Rudy, they turned him over to Rescue to find a better home.

Rudy is wonderful.  He loves to be held like a baby and kissed, returning affection tenfold.  He is crate trained, and 90% house trained.  He is quiet and gentle with his person, enjoying cuddling and belly rubs while watching TV.  How could anybody have treated this baby so shabbily?

Rudy is shy at first, but becomes very affectionate once you have earned his trust.  He is always asking to be picked up and cuddled.  Rudy needs leash training, as he is still a puppy.  He likes car rides if they are not too long.  He is apprehensive at the dog-park.  He really doesn’t enjoy it yet.  He is healthy, his shots are current, and he was just neutered and microchipped.  We think he is a good candidate for someone who has a dog-friendly cat.  He is learning about how to play from his new buddies in his foster home.

We are looking for a home for Rudy where he will have a friendly female canine companion and someone willing to give him lots of attention.  He deserves to be fussed over, and spoiled rotten.  He is safe with gentle children over 8 years old.  If you work from home or have an active life style, then you would be an ideal home for Rudy.  He wants to go with you everywhere.

If you are interested in Rudy, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Rudy is $300.00.

New!

Name: Mango
Age: 10 Years
Color: Black
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie - 15 lbs.

Poor Mango was taken to the pound by his people in mid-March.  Although they didn’t say why they were getting rid of him, we suspect it was because he had a large cystic growth on his neck, and they didn’t want to (or couldn’t) pay to have it removed.  The nice people at the shelter took care of it and biopsied the mass to make sure it was benign, which it was.  After going through this major surgery, Mango sat in the pound for three more months.  He was a staff favorite, which explains why they kept him for so long, but no one wanted to adopt this sweet, sweet dog.  Although Mango doesn’t seem to have much dachshund in him, we just couldn’t leave him there a moment longer.  He was so grateful to be in a home again!

Mango might be 10 years old, but he looks and acts like a much younger dog. In fact, he is so youthful and active that we didn’t believe he was over five years old, but our vet confirmed it. She also confirmed that he is a healthy dog with no heart, vision or hearing problems.  We think Mango is a mix of dachshund, spaniel and something else. He doesn’t photograph very well, so it’s hard to tell from his picture that he is an extremely handsome dog. He has a beautiful, soft, healthy coat and cute little fold-over ears. His body is the size and shape of a small standard dachshund, but he has taller legs, which makes him a good choice for families with stairs in their home.

A squishy little dog, Mango loves to be held and petted.  He seems hungry for love and affection. He’s a very loyal companion, quiet, sweet-tempered and very easy to have around.  He sleeps peacefully in his crate at night, but he would prefer to sleep on the bed, curled up by his person’s feet.

Mango enjoys meeting new people and dogs, especially the girl doxies. Although he would do perfectly well as an “only dog”, he would also enjoy having a canine companion. He would like to have his people around as much as possible, but he would probably be okay in a working family.  We think he would be the ideal companion for a senior woman or couple.  He probably wouldn’t do well with boisterous children, but children over six years old would be fine, as long as they are gentle with him.  He doesn’t seem to care much about cats.

Neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, Mango is ready for his forever home.  If you would like to meet him or foster him, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Mango is only $100.00.

Name: Zoey
Age: 6 years
Color: Chocolate & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 11 lbs

Name: Zeus
Age: 5 years
Color: Red Piebald
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 12 lbs

Zoey and Zeus had it rough before they came into rescue.  Their family lost their home to foreclosure, fought a lot, and finally divorce left Zoey and Zeus in another very bad situation.  The people who were taking care of them let them get terribly, terribly thin.  Our vet ran tests and found nothing wrong with them.  They just weren’t getting fed enough or on a regular basis.  They were skin and bones when they came to rescue, but now they are filling out and looking quite nice.

Everyone who meets these two falls in love with them.  In addition to being absolutely adorable, they are both sweet-tempered and full of personality.  Zoey is crazy about her ball. The only time she doesn’t have a ball in her mouth is when she’s eating—she even falls asleep with it in her mouth!  A submissive little girl, Zoey is mellow and very easy to have around.

Zeus is a dominant male. He gets along with other dogs, but he will establish dominance over any other male dogs in the home.  Although he is feisty and can get into mischief, he is extremely loving and affectionate.  He will sit on his person’s lap for hours.  When he’s not washing his sister’s face and ears, he’s usually sleeping on her, and Zoey loves it!

Zoey and Zeus are housetrained, but they will need a refresher course in their new home.  They wouldn’t do well in an apartment or condo—they need a fenced yard and a doggy door.  Zoey is quiet, but Zeus will bark at squirrels and other yard invaders (i.e., the mail carrier, the gardener). They are crate trained and go in happily when asked, but they would probably love to cuddle in bed with their person.  They enjoy going for walks, but since being out and about on a leash is a new experience for them, they pull a little.  They would benefit tremendously from basic obedience class.

Zoey and Zeus love meeting new people:  Zeus greets them with kisses and a wagging tail, and Zoey runs up with her ball in her mouth, waiting for the visitor to throw her ball for her.  We think they’d be fine with children over eight years old.  They are not good with cats.  Zeus and Zoey are a bonded pair, and we will not separate them.  They must be adopted together—NO EXCEPTIONS!

Healthy, spayed/neutered and vaccinated, Zoe and Zeus are ready for their forever home. If you would like to meet them, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for both doxies together is $400.00.

Courtesy Listing for Pups and Pals Rescue.

Name: Magoo
Age:  5 months
Color: Black & Tan Double Dapple
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini. – 7.5 lbs.

Magoo is a male, double dapple, longhaired dachshund puppy. He is absolutely gorgeous with spots of dapple and red on a white background.  Unfortunately, this color breeding does sometimes come with a genetic condition affecting vision and hearing.

Our little Magoo has limited eyesight, because he has an abnormally tiny right eye.  He is not in any discomfort and will do well as he has never had it any other way.  He doesn’t know what its like to see like a regular dog.  He does not run into walls, but his sight is not perfect.  Magoo may also have some hearing problems.

Magoo is shy, snuggly and so sweet.  He will make a great pet for someone willing to overlook his special needs.  He is about 5 months old now and weights 7.5 lbs so he will likely stay a mini.

Magoo is a playful boy who loves treats and toys, he is a great puppy.  He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed.  If you are interested in adopting Magoo, please visit www.pupsandpals.net for more info and an adoption application.  Also, please note that we are all volunteers, so it may take 3-5 days to process your application, but you will hear back from us.

The adoption fee for Magoo is $275.00

Name: Haily
Age: 2 years
Color: Red Sable
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard. – 24 lbs.

Haily is a female doxie/spaniel/corgi mix. She is a very sweet, happy girl. She was abandoned by her owner at a boarding kennel.  They left her there and never came back to pick her up.

Haily is very forgiving, and needs a loyal home now. She is more comfortable with women then with men, but will warm up to men.  She is just a little more hesitant around them.

Haily is very pretty, healthy, vaccinated, and microchipped.  All she needs now is a loving forever home.

If you are interested in adopting Haily, please visit www.pupsandpals.net for more info and an adoption application.  Also, please note that we are all volunteers, so it may take 3-5 days to process your application, but you will hear back from us.

Name: Chase
Age: 2 years
Color: Red & White
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Neutered Male
Size: Tweenie - 15 lbs.

Chase was found running around the streets of San Diego last December with no collar or microchip to identify who he was or who his people were.  For five months, the family who found him and took him into their home have searched in vain for his former family.  Though they love Chase very much, they have several other dogs and cannot legally keep another, so they have asked Rescue to find Chase a permanent loving home.

Chase appears to be a dachshund mix. We think he has a little bit of beagle in his family tree.  He is the same size as a tweenie dachshund, but he has some coloring of his beagle ancestry.  He is the nicest boy ever.  As you can see from his picture, Chase is a very handsome fellow, as sweet and affectionate as he is good-looking.  Who could resist those soulful eyes?  Chase gives nice kisses, and he loves to be cuddled.  He is good with other dogs and enjoys their company.  We don’t know if he is safe around cats.  We feel he would be fine with gentle children over 10 years old.

Chase needs a home with people who are kind and gentle.  His foster family has observed that he is really sensitive and if you move towards him really fast and or reach for him suddenly, he cries out, because he gets scared.  To his credit, however, he is perfectly house trained.  He had a few accidents in the beginning, but is doing better now that he is on a good schedule. Chase is shy around men, so they have to take is slow with Chase to win his trust and loyalty.

Chase is very healthy, his vaccines are up-to-date and he has been microchipped.  If you are interested in Chase, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Chase is $250.00

Name: Isak
Age: < 2 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 13 lbs.

Isak was picked up as a skinny stray in Sonoma .  He was very scared in the shelter, so shelter personnel contacted Rescue and asked us to take him.  He's still a bit thin, but he is starting to fill out nicely.  It has become obvious to his foster mom that Isak was treated harshly in his previous home.  He is a gentle dog by nature and needs lots of loving to get over his past abusers.

Isak is a lovely black and tan with a gorgeous hound face.  He is lacking a bit in confidence, so he would do best in a home with another dog to mentor him.  He has been playing well with a variety of dogs in his foster home, males and females.  Isak has indicated that he would like to chase the resident cat, so he would do best in a “no cat” home.

Isak is crate trained, and his house training is coming along nicely.  If he is taken outside promptly upon rising and periodically throughout the day, he is accident-free.  He needs someone willing to keep him on a schedule so he can become reliably house trained in the shortest amount of time.  He needs a home with a dog-door and access to the yard to help make achieving this goal possible.

Isak is young with a young dog's energy.  He needs a home that will give him lots of exercise and consistent rules (to help with his confidence).  Experienced families with gentle children over 8 years old are encouraged to apply.

Neutered and current on his vaccinations, Isak is ready for his forever home. If you would like to meet him, please e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Isak is $300.00.

This dog is being fostered in the S.F. Bay Area
Transport to Southern California is possible if necessary.
Name: Rupert
Age: 2 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini - 12 lbs.

Rupert's original owners loved him, but they didn't really take care of him.  He came into rescue with his daughter, Dee Dee.  We split the two dogs up, because Dee Dee was very dependent on Rupert and needed to learn to be more independent and socialized with other dogs.

Rupert’s true personality began to come out after he was no longer responsible for Dee Dee.  He is now extremely playful, the one dog all the other foster dogs at his home want to socialize with.  Rupert is extremely affectionate with people and loves to sit on laps.  He has a lot of youthful energy.  As he gets more comfortable, he is becoming more puppy-like.  He loves going for walks.  He is also a good car traveler.

Rupert has a lovely silky coat and a handsome face.  He is crate trained and his foster family is working on perfecting his house training skills. He could go to a home with older, respectful children.  He would really love to have a young, playful female dog as a companion as well. Unfortunately, Rupert failed the cat test and cannot be placed in a home with cats.

Rupert is healthy, though he needs to put on a little weight, and all his vaccinations have been brought up-to-date.

If you are interested in Rupert, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Rupert is $300.00.

Name: Trevor
Age: 1 ½ - 2 years
Color: Black & Tan Dapple
Coat: Wirehair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini. – 10.5 lbs.

Trevor is a cute little wirehaired doxie (possibly a mix). We estimate he is around 18 months to 2 years old.  He is just slightly taller than the average dachshund.  We estimate he will fill out to be about 12 pounds.  He is outgoing, sweet and loves making friends.  Taking a walk is his favorite thing. Trevor will need a bit more training as he is still a puppy, but he will be a great dog for a special home.

Trevor does not do well left alone for long hours, so he would be happiest with someone who works from home or has other young, playful dogs to keep him company.

If you are interested in adopting Trevor, please visit www.pupsandpals.net for more info an the adoption application.  Also, please note that we are all volunteers, so it may take 3-5 days to process your application, but you will hear back from us.

Keebler at nearly 30 lbs.

Keebler at 23 lbs.

Keebler at a svelt 20 lbs.

This dog is being fostered in the S.F. Bay Area
Transport to Southern California is possible if necessary.

Name: Keebler (was Chunk)
Age: 6 years
Color: Red Dapple
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Obese Tweenie - 27 lbs.

Keebler and his "sister", Sadie, were surrendered by their owner to an overcrowded northern CA shelter.  We agreed to take them sight-unseen.  We were told that the male was overweight, but nothing prepared us for Keebler.  We were shocked at just how obese he really was.  He came to us weighing almost 31 pounds, which is double what he should be.   His nails were so long, he could hardly walk, and his stomach touched the ground.

On his owner surrender papers it asked if there were any behavioral problems.  On Keebler's it said "too lovable and overweight".  Both of those are understatements.  In foster care, Keebler has begun losing weight quite easily.  He does not overeat if all he is offered is quality low-calorie dog food. (It was clearly people food that got Keebler in his fat state.)  After taking off just two pounds, he became a different dog.  Once his stomach was no longer dragging on the ground, Keebler became quite frisky.  Keebler's first picture shows him at nearly 30 lbs and he is losing weight each week.  As of June 30th, he has lost a total of 10.5 lbs. is now around 20 lbs.  His foster family has changed his name permanently from Chunk to Keebler.

Keebler is extremely people focused and will follow his foster mom everywhere.  He does not like to be left alone, so he either needs a home where his human is around most of the time or where he has a canine sibling or two.  He is really enjoying his short walks and is getting more energy every day.  He also is starting to get playful with the young dogs who share his foster home.  He loves to cuddle and is delighted if he is allowed up on the big bed.

Once he is svelte again, he is going to be a gorgeous dog.  He has red dappling on his face and front paws and a wonderfully expressive face.  He has no interest in cats and he has been very good with the other dogs. However, he is unreliable around small children, older teens would be OK.

If you are interested in Keebler, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Keebler is $200.00.

Name: Mitzi
Ages: 12 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Tweenie – 16 lbs.

Name: Frieda
Ages: 12 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 18 lbs.

When Frieda and Mitzi’s owner died, no one in the family wanted to take them in. Family members have entrusted Rescue to find them a wonderful home.  They were so traumatized by their owner’s death and the aftermath, they did not eat for almost a week, did not want to leave the security of their crate.

After living with their foster family for the past 6 months, the Golden Girls, as we refer to them, are more than ready to have a home of their own. Best friends for 12 years, they stick together through thick and thin.  Like the sitcom character Maude, Frieda is independent, feisty, outspoken, bossy, opinionated and domineering, but she is also loving, devoted, sweet and kind.  She sits up on her hind legs and gives you the “I love you”-“pet me” eyes. She likes to be the first dog sitting next to you while you watch television.  She will follow you anywhere you go in the house or outside.

Frieda enjoys bathing in the sun and snooping around the yard. She often runs and plays with the younger foster children even though she is grey in the face, you would not know she is an “older woman”. Every once in awhile, she will pick up a toy and play with it. Frieda is the outgoing one.  She runs around, chases and plays with the younger dogs.  She is a little bossy at times, and does not hesitate to corral them, or put them in their place when she has had enough, but she is not aggressive or mean.

Meanwhile, her best friend Mitzi does not mind being second fiddle.  She is polite, sweet, expressive and kind.  She seems to always have a smile on her face!  She loves to chase and hunt lizards, but could care less about the wild birds or the turtles that live in the backyard.  Mitzi is somewhat smaller than her sister.  She is very loving, likes to be close to you, and be petted as often as she can.  She is very sweet and gentle, and likes to groom the other dogs.

They also both like to groom each other, sleep a good deal of the day, love to nap in the warm sun and have learned several commands since they have lived with their foster parents.  Frieda and Mitzi are both in good health.  Their vaccinations are all current.  They both have had full health exams and a recent dental cleaning.  So now they have sweet breath and give delicious kisses.

Do you have room in your heart and home for these beautiful sisters?  They have twice the love to give and will bestow a lucky new family with years of joy.  They have been together for 12 years and are a bonded pair.  They cannot be separated.

If you can provide a good home for Frieda and Mitzi, please contact Dawn at dawnaa@pacbell.net.  A completed adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for both Frieda and Mitzi is a donation to SCDR only.

Name: Mikey
Age: 14 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie

Mikey’s owner ended up in the hospital for an extended time, and no one in her family wanted to take on an older dog, so he ended up being turned over to rescue.  Mikey is almost completely blind and starting to go deaf probably from old-age, but he still navigates just fine once he learns the layout of the house.

Before coming to rescue, Mikey lived outside on a ranch.  A few years ago, he was kicked by a horse, resulting in one side of his face being paralyzed (much like a stroke victim), so that one eye doesn't close all the way.  Mikey is still able to eat and drink just fine though, and being an older guy with some "old age" issues doesn't seem to slow him down in the least.  Mikey LOVES to chew on bones and is an absolute chow hound.

When Mikey came into rescue, he weighed over 17 pounds.  He's now on a strict diet to help him trim down. Mikey tends to have a bit of a delicate tummy, so a simple diet of lamb and rice dog food is all he really needs to be happy - too many treats and his poor little tummy gets very upset.

Mikey is potty-pad trained and we're working on his house training - since he was an “outdoor only” dog before, he got used to going potty wherever he felt like it, but he's doing really well with the potty pads and is learning to bark when he needs to go outside.  Mikey will need to have a dental cleaning done within the next year - he had one a year ago, but you know how those doxie teeth can be.

Mikey gets along great with other dogs and is also fine with cats, but he just really wants a nice warm lap to curl up in and a person to cuddle with.  He's a huge snuggle-bug and would make a great dog for an senior citizen looking for a companion who's not too active, but still has plenty of good years left.

If you are interested in Mikey and want to give him a forever home, please contact Katie at katie@collared-scholar.com or call 619-916-8897 for more information!

The adoption fee for Mikey is on a donation basis only.

Name: Bunny
Age: 12 Years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 20 lbs.

Bunny is why we always enjoy taking senior doxies into rescue. Gentle, sweet and adorable, she is a true pleasure to have around. She loves everyone she meets, especially men, and will happily greet visitors with a wagging tail and a nice kiss. Like many lady doxies, she’s a real “daddy’s girl”, so she should have a daddy in her new home.  She gets along great with other dogs, and would like a mellow dachshund for a companion. Like many seniors, she sleeps a lot during the day, so she’d be fine living with people who work regular hours. She is quiet and seldom barks. Doesn’t she sound perfect? We think so, too!

Bunny had bladder stones when she came into rescue. Our vet removed them, but she needs to have an annual urinalysis to make sure they haven’t recurred. Otherwise, she’s extremely healthy, with clear eyes and sharp hearing. She enjoys napping in the sun, exploring the backyard and going on pleasant walks around the neighborhood. In the evenings, she especially enjoys curling up next to her person on the couch. In every way, Bunny is loving, affectionate, and sweet.

At night, she hops right into her crate, but she’d probably really love to sleep with her person. We think she’d be fine with gentle children over five years old. She is NOT good with cats—true to the breed, she chases small animals and is a very good ratter. She’ll earn her keep if you have rodents in the yard! Bunny is housetrained and knows how to use the dog door.

Spayed and vaccinated, Bunny is ready to meet her new people. If you would like to meet Bunny, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Bunny is $100.00.

Name: Elmer
Approx. Age: 9-10 years
Color: Wild Boar
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard – 17 lbs.

When Elmer’s family moved to a new house, they could not take Elmer with them.  Instead, they gave Elmer to their in-laws who put Elmer out in the back yard 24/7.  No matter what the weather conditions, poor Elmer was not allowed in the house.  A drafty dog house and ratty blanket were all he had for shelter and comfort for two years.  He became obese from lack of regular exercise.  When Elmer’s family came to visit, they were appalled when they saw the conditions under which Elmer was living, and they took Elmer to Rescue for placement in a proper home where he could sleep in the warmth and comfort of an indoor environment, get regular exercise and lose the excess weight.

Elmer may be sort of homely, but he’s adorable in his own fashion.  His paws and muzzle may be getting frosted, but since losing considerable weight and getting regular walks and exercise, his energy level is soaring.  He is now a very active boy.  We are looking for someone who wants a dog to accompany them on brisk walks, play ball or Frisbee, and also wants to snuggle in the big bed or on the sofa while reading or watching television.  He likes to have his rump scratched and his belly rubbed.  He is also very “food driven”, so never leave your snacks or dishes where he can easily reach them.

Elmer is dependably house trained.  That's a big plus. Elmer is very good with adults, especially men.  When guests arrive, Elmer is not in the least bit protective of his people.  He is 100% fine with new people as long as they don't touch his paws or approach him from behind.  You will never have to worry about introducing him to anybody, and when entertaining at home, you will only have to warn people not to let him near their food.

Elmer is not safe with children under 12 years old.  Teens would be OK.  He is an excellent “ratter”, and for this reason, we will not place him in a home with cats.  His prey instinct is very strong.  He has successfully caught birds and rodents at his foster home.  He gets along with other dachshunds and would not mind having a female companion.  He's also completely fine with large breed dogs.

Elmer is happy, full of energy, plays chase with his foster sister, shares food, toys, and his bed too.  He loves to sunbathe and he even likes getting a bath.  His leash training is excellent – he never pulls.  His foster mom says "he’s a very silly boy".

Elmer is healthy and current on all vaccines. He is crate trained and 100% house trained.  Elmer knows how to use a dog door and likes coming and going at his own discretion.  He is ever on alert for gardeners, UPS delivery people, and the dreaded postal delivery person.  He is convinced they are all axe-murders.

If you are interested in Elmer, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Elmer is $125.00.

How Big Is Your Heart?

Name: Sister
Age: 6 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 16 lbs.

Name: Brother
Age: 6 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard – 22 lbs.

Given to Rescue after their owner died, Brother and Sister are a very sad reminder of what happens when unqualified people breed their dogs. The offspring of two littermates, Brother and Sister were born with serious congenital defects. After several tests, our vet thinks their spinal cords never developed properly. Brother and Sister cannot raise their heads more than about 12” from the ground and their brains don’t know how to feel sensation in their feet, which means they both have a very difficult time walking. They’re okay on carpet or grass, but without that traction they fall over when they try to move. In addition, Brother has neurological problems that present in the form of difficulty communicating and a mild case of epilepsy, which is effectively controlled by Phenobarbital (very inexpensive). As if all these problems weren’t enough, Brother and Sister were bred together, too. How can people do things like this? We don’t understand.

Some people might think that these doxies aren’t worth saving or that they have such a poor quality of life that it would be better to have them humanely euthanized. After spending some time getting to know them, we think otherwise. We’ve seen that even though they have physical limitations, Brother and Sister really enjoy their lives. They remind us of people with developmental disabilities—their bodies and minds may not work like everyone else’s, but their spirits are filled with love. We don’t think it’s time for them to leave this world.

We don’t think either dog knows anything is wrong with them. Brother greets his foster mom and dad with a wagging tail and particularly enjoys being near his foster dad. He loves to be held and scratched on his neck—he makes the funniest faces when we find his “sweet spot”! Sister follows her foster mom around all day, getting around as best she can. If her foster mom steps out of view even for a moment, Sister does a happy dance when she sees her again. A sweet, slightly silly girl, Sister likes to carry a stuffed toy in her mouth. When the other dogs get noisy and too boisterous, she schools them on proper behavior. She’s quite a character. They both love to sunbathe in the back yard, and Brother can even make it back inside sometimes. Sister prefers to wait until someone carries her inside. She’s a bit of a princess.

Despite their physical limitations, Brother and Sister are very easy to have around. They enjoy curling up together in a big dog bed or watching the other doxies run around and play. In addition to being spayed/neutered and current on their vaccinations, they are housetrained and very good at holding it until they are taken outside. They cannot navigate the dog door, so they need to be carried outdoors three or four times a day to do their business. They sleep peacefully in their crate at night, but they would also enjoy sleeping in the big bed with their person—they love to cuddle and snuggle.

Unfortunately, we have recently discovered that Brother can be very aggressive with strangers. If someone he doesn't trust tries to pick him up, he will bite. Fortunately, this problem is easily resolved by crating Brother when people visit. He won't mind, and his people won't have to worry. He is safe with his owners, but they will need to take the time to get to know him and gain his trust before they can safely handle him. He also seems to recognize frequent visitors and is fine with them, too. Sister is perfectly happy to meet anyone, anytime and is safe with all visitors and family members.

For the right person, these two dogs will be the perfect companions, but it’s going to take a long time and a lot of work before we find that person. They are a bonded pair, and they cannot be separated. We will only place them together.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Brother and Sister, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Brother and Sister is a donation to rescue.

Name: Petey
Age: 1 year
Color: Brindle Piebald
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 12 lbs.

Petey was found on the street shortly after he had been hit by a car. A good person took him to the Camarillo Shelter where the vet said he needed six weeks of bed-rest to heal and that he would probably be OK without surgery.  His family never showed up to claim him.  He is an adorable dachshund/terrier mix.  We were quite pleased to take him home for rest, rehabilitation and subsequently find a new, loving home.

Petey will give you unconditional love, slobbery kisses that won't end, and beg for belly rubs. He is your typical puppy, always busy looking for mischief.  He is very smart, and he has boundless energy, but he is also very anxious to please.  He would really love obedience and or agility training.  Petey needs a young, active family – one with children to run and play with him.

Petey is 90% house trained, crate trained and knows the dog-door.  He loves to run around the yard, and loves to play with other dachshunds.  Petey really enjoys going for walks and needs at least two long walks a day.  In lieu of walks, throwing a ball or Frisbee for him would work as well.  He also likes to ride in the car.  We do not know if he is cat-safe.  He is not safe with children under 5 years old.  Although Petey is crate trained, he prefers sleeping under the covers on your bed, but will settle for a comforter in his crate instead.  He loves to cuddle and snuggle.

Petey appears to have one fault:  He is territorial when new people come to the door, so he needs to be introduced slowly.  He is not a dog that would do well alone for 8 or more hours a day, as he gets into things when he is alone.  He needs socialization with other dogs and people - but loves everyone.  Obedience classes would be very beneficial for helping to solve this problem.

Petey is now in good health.  At times, he will hike up his back leg when he runs.  (This could be a result of his previous injury or it just feels good when he does it.  Many dogs walk on four, but run on three for some reason.)  His vaccinations are all up-to-date, and his teeth are so white you will need sunglasses to look at them.  Petey is not an apartment or condo dog.  He needs a big back yard to run off his excess energy.  He would not do well cooped up in an apartment all day.

If you can provide a good home for Petey, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Petey is $250.00.

Name: Jasper
Age: 8 years
Color: Brindle
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard – 20 lbs.

Jasper was adopted from a shelter back in August of 2008 by a nice young lady.  He was dirty and very matted.  The nice young lady took him home, and was totally clueless as to how to groom a longhaired dachshund, so she had him bathed and shaved to get rid of all the all the mats and start fresh.  After that, he looked more like a fuzzy teddy bear than a dachshund.  After a few months, the young lady realized that she really didn’t have time for Jasper, what with working, college, and the busy social life of a young person.  So she asked Rescue to find Jasper a home where they will pay more attention to him.  We readily agreed.

Jasper made himself right at home almost immediately.  He commandeered a large dog crate with a nice blanket and this where he sleeps at night.  Other than the fact that his previous owner said he was 8 years old, we'd have never guessed it.  Jasper is a ball-playing fool.  He loves to play fetch, and if you'll keep throwing the ball for him, you'll likely wear out before he will.  He is a bit shy with new people, but warms up quickly.  Jasper is fine with other dogs, but he is also happy to be your one and only lover boy.

Jasper knows the dog-door and appears to be house trained.  He likes exploring the yard and sunning himself.  He likes going for walks and travels well in the car.  He is a very good eater; maybe too good.  He is on a weight reduction diet.  Jasper is healthy and has had his teeth cleaned.  All his vaccines are current and he’s microchipped.  Jasper would like a home with someone who is retired and can give him lots of love and attention.  He is safe with visiting grandchildren over 5 years old, no babies or toddlers please.  Previous experience with grooming a longhaired dachshund is a big plus.

If you are interested in Jasper, please contact Anna at anna_banana@yahoo.com.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Jasper is only $150.00.

Name: Mason
Age:  8-9 years
Color: Black and Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 15 lbs.

Mason wandered away from his back yard and got lost.  He is 90% blind, seeing only light and shadows.  He was picked up stray by the Central California S.P.C.A. in Fresno .  He waited and waited, since before Christmas, but no one came to bring him home.  When we found out about Mason, we arranged a transport and had him released to rescue.  He is now in Southern California to find a new home.

Mason is truly a gem of a dog.  He likes baths and doesn’t mind having his ears cleaned or his teeth brushed.  He has no objection to getting antibiotic drops in his eyes.  He was grateful for all the kindness bestowed on him by his new foster mom.   He gets along well with older children (not toddlers), and he would be happiest in a home with other dachshunds, especially of the senior female variety.  We don’t know if he likes cats.  We don't think he sees well enough to be a threat to any cat.

Mason is crate trained, and is getting a short refresher course in house training.  He is doing well, especially if kept on a schedule of specific potty outings and regular, leisurely, walks around the neighborhood.  He knows the dog door, but sometimes chooses to ignore it; he’s a dachshund from the old school.  Mason regards his loss of vision as a minor inconvenience, nothing more.  He gets around just fine.  He requires daily eye drops, but that is so trivial, it is hardly worth mentioning.  Mason is healthy and up-to-date on his vaccinations.  His hearing is acute, but Mason can be guilty of “dachshund selective hearing syndrome”.

Mason needs a home that is all on one level with no stairs and just a step or two that can be easily ramped to make it easy for him to navigate in and out the door.  Mason is a very sweet, easy-going boy.  He needs a home with folks willing to continue his house training routine and who can give Mason the love and attention he is so willing to return one hundred fold.

If you are interested in Mason, please contact Anna at anna_banana@yahoo.com. An adoption application is required.

Mason’s adoption fee is only $125.00.

Name: Rusty
Age: 13 years
Color: Red
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Name: Carly
Age: 11 years
Color: Red
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Rusty and Carly were left homeless when their owner passed away.  Family members didn’t want them and threatened to put them down unless a home was found for them.  A kind neighbor who was caring for them contacted Rescue and we were very happy to take them into our program.

Rusty and Carly have been together all of their lives.  They are very bonded to each other.  They are friendly and enjoy being held in any available lap, cuddling and begging for belly rubs.  They love going for walks and travel well in the car.  They play and cuddle with each other.  These are absolutely the most adorable seniors.  They are so sweet, affectionate, and grateful for every kindness.  Don’t you just love their little white faces?

Rusty and Carly are as healthy as senior dachshunds can be.  We updated all their vaccines and they have had complete dentals.  We cannot split them up as they are emotionally attached to each other.  They get along very, very well with other dachshunds and would do well in a multi-dachshund home.  We don’t know if they are cat-safe.  They are safe with children over 5 years old.

If you can give these two seniors a home for the rest of their lives, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.  They come with all their worldly possessions - dog beds, bowls, leashes, and some toys.

The adoption fee for Rusty and Carly is a donation to rescue.
They must stay together.

Name: Schnitzel
Age: 9-10 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini - 10 lbs.

Schnitzel was horribly decrepit and virtually hairless when found on the streets of Santa Maria .  He looked like he had been there for some time.  Either that or his previous owner severely neglected him.  Most likely, it was some combination of both.  We estimate his age to be between 9 and 10.

Now in foster care with good food and lots of love, he has finally blossomed into a handsome boy.  He is probably an “alpha” personality as he is always challenging other members of his pack he thinks he can bully, but he does not pursue a fight.  He just tries to push the others around when it comes to competing for a bone, treat, or a toy.  He should be an “only dog” if possible, but he would probably tolerate a female companion who is not dominant.

On the other hand, with people, Schnitzel is a very grateful and completely friendly boy for having been taken off the street.  His black and tan longhair brushes out very nicely after his bath.  He deserves the attention of someone who can be there for him a lot.  A retired person or someone who works from home would be ideal.  He craves the attention he can't get as an older dog competing with the younger ones in a pack.

Schnitzel really appreciates attention and wants to please a dedicated owner.  He likes going for walks and cuddling in his person’s lap.  Of course, he expects to sleep in the big bed as well.  In his foster home, he has learned to use the dog door and to go outside to potty.

Schnitzel is up-to-date on his vaccines and is now healthy.  If you are interested in Schnitzel, please contact Ralph at ottorig3@gmail.com or call (805) 857-8590.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Schnitzel is $150.00.

Name: J.R.
Age: 8 years
Color: Red Piebald
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie - 16 lbs.

When J.R.’s owner passed away, no one in the family wanted him.  They put him out in the back yard and basically, forgot about him.  Luckily, a neighbor, and good friend of the deceased owner, took responsibility for the abandoned dog.  She took him to her own home, fed him and took care of him until Rescue had room to take him in.  She could not keep J.R. as she had three dogs of her own.

J.R. enjoys being held and cuddled, but can become possessive of his person.  Just give him a soft blanket in a comfy doggy bed to snuggle and he’s a happy little camper.  It is very apparent that he was rarely taken for walks.  J.R. likes going for short walks.  He is  fine on car rides if he has a fluffy comforter to snuggle in.  Unfortunately, we've learned that he cannot be trusted with children or cats.  J.R. needs a person with previous dachshund experience to establish boundaries and elicit proper behavior from J.R. when children are present.

J.R. is current on his vaccines and is very healthy.  We are looking for a mature couple or single person who can give him a lot of attention as he was starved for affection and needs lots of love.

If you can provide a good home for J.R. please contact Ralph at ottorig3@gmail.com or call (805) 857-8590.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for J.R. is $175.00.

Name: Simon
Age: 2.5 years
Color: Black/Tan Piebald
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Simon lost his home because he is a fear-biter and he can be food and treat aggressive.  Because of these behaviors, he is unpredictable around children.  Since his former owners are trying to start a family, they felt Simon needed to find a new home.

Simon needs an owner who will be a strong, confident pack leader.   This will allow Simon to relax and make him far less likely to fear-bite.  Simon also needs an owner who has consistent rules so that he learns that he is not the one in charge.  His new owner will need to be vigilant when Simon is in new situations, giving Simon time to get comfortable before people approach him.

In his foster home, Simon is a delightful dog.  He is very loving and cuddly.  He has been doing extremely well with the many dogs in his foster home and has some excellent play manners.  He would do well with a young, friendly dog companion.

Simon has tons of energy.  (Pies are the high energy dachshunds).  Simon needs a home where he will get a great deal of exercise.  He is learning to go to the park to play and to greet people outside his house appropriately.  A new owner would need to continue this training.

Simon, at one time, lived with a cat and could most likely learn to do so again.  He is totally housebroken.  Simon has received excellent medical care during his life, including bloat correction surgery.  Simon is healthy and his vaccinations are all up-to-date.  If you are interested in Simon, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Simon is $250.00.

Name: Kharmen Ghia
Age: 6 Years
Color: Piebald Double Dapple
with blue eyes
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 12 lbs.

Kharmen-Ghia’s former owners purchased Kharmen at a pet store, and like many pet store puppies, she had serious health problems they were not prepared to deal with. Kharmen was extremely thin and malnourished. She had chronic diarrhea and it appeared that her food was not being digested at all. Unwilling or unable to pay for tests to find out what was wrong with her, they turned her over to Rescue.

After several expensive tests, we knew what we were dealing with: Kharmen-Ghia has a genetic condition in which her pancreas does not secrete the enzymes her body needs to process food. Luckily, this condition can be helped with a dietary supplement. Unfortunately, the supplement costs average between $30 to $50 a month.  Kharmen also has a pinched nerve in her neck that acts up every once in a while; it’s a temporary condition that is easily resolved with Metacam, a relatively inexpensive anti-inflammatory medication that also reduces pain.

Even though Kharmen has special needs, she is a delight. A beautiful, loving little doxie, Kharmen has elected herself “Miss Congeniality,” welcoming all new rescue dogs into her foster home and inviting them to play and run with her, greeting one and all with a happy face and wagging tail. She runs, plays "wrestle mania" and can leap tall baby gates in a single bound (literally)—not to escape the house, but to run to Mommy’s bed. She loves to watch the birds and survey her kingdom. She will sleep in her crate, but she would love to cuddle under the covers in the big bed with her person. She would be fine with children over 10 years old, as long as they are careful with her neck. She would like to have a doxie companion. She has very little interest in cats and would do fine in a home with dog-friendly kitties. Kharmen is housetrained and knows how to use the dog door.

Spayed and current on her vaccinations, Kharmen is ready for her forever home. If you would like to meet Kharmen-Ghia, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

Name: Ebony
Age: approx. 6 months
Color: Black
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 25 lbs.

Ebony was found running around lost in an industrial area in San Bernardino County .  She looks like a miniature Labrador Retriever with short legs.  Despite her being shy, Ebony is a friendly, affectionate, happy girl.  We thought she was a fabulous puppy and took her into rescue to find a new home.  Ebony is breathtakingly beautiful.  It is so difficult to get a good picture of an all-black dog.  Her picture does not do her justice.

Ebony is sweet, quiet, well behaved, and crate trained.  She is undergoing some remedial house training instruction.  She has been very cooperative and successful in her training so far.  We are looking for a loving, compassionate person who is willing to continue to reinforce her house training skills.  She will not do well in a home where no one is home for 8 to 9 hours a day.  Ebony needs to be taken outside to potty several times a day.  She is not an apartment dog, as she needs a home with a dog-door and a yard to run and play.  She loves going for walks, but she is a bit apprehensive in the car.  Ebony must have been somebody’s special baby girl, because she prefers to sleep in the big bed with her people, snuggling under the covers.

Ebony is young and energetic.  Despite her large size, she is quite agile, and has scaled a 3 foot high baby gate with ease.  She has been caught counter-surfing as well.  (That is standing on her hind legs with front legs on the edge of the kitchen counter, checking out potential food to steal.)  She corrects very well and has not attempted to jump the baby-gate or counter-surf since being corrected.

Potential adopters must also have a very secure yard and take precautions before opening any door leading to the street.  She is young and can run like the wind.  We recommend taking her to obedience classes at the earliest opportunity.  She would be great if trained as a Therapy Dog or Search and Rescue Dog.

Ebony would like a home with a male dachshund or Labrador for company if possible.  She plays nicely, even with the littlest of dachshunds.  She loves wrestle-mania.   Folks who work from home or who can take their dog to work would be perfect for her as well.  Ebony is very safe around babies or toddlers, but would be even better with older children.  We do not know if she is cat-safe, but her sweet disposition indicates that cats would probably not be an issue.  Ebony is current on all vaccines and has been microchipped.

If you are interested in Ebony, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Ebony is $300.00.

Age: 7 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Nini was surrendered to a Northern California shelter along with her very elderly chihuahua companion.  Unfortunately he was very sick, and he had to be euthanized, leaving Nini bereft, so shelter volunteers called rescue to save her.

Nini is a sweet, sweet girl who is starved for love and affection.  She loves hanging out on the couch with her humans and adores cuddling under the covers in the big bed.  This dog is very sweet.  Unfortunately, she is definitely not safe with cats, but to her credit, she is getting along better and better with her new canine siblings.  Nini is now enjoying the companionship of a dachshund brother and a dachshund mix sister and has really blossomed.

Nini was recently spayed and had a complete dental.  She is getting a refresher course in house training, and her vaccines are all up-to-date.

If you can provide a good home for Nini, please fill out an application and email Lindy at linla@comcast.net.

The adoption fee for Nini is $175.00.

Name: Julius
Age: 5 Years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Julius has had a hard life. We think he was a “yard dog,” meaning he never got to come in the house, but lived in the backyard. He has scars all over his face and ears, which tells us he was beaten up a lot by the other dog(s) at his home. He somehow managed to get out of his yard—and he was hit by a car. He has “road rash” on his flank, and we think his leg was damaged. Whatever the case, he’s fine now and runs around everywhere. When he first came into rescue, he was scared and starved for attention, but after just a few days, he was bouncing around like a happy little doggie.

Julius is a play machine! He’s always in the toy box, pulling out stuffies and balls. In fact, his favorite game is knocking over the toy box, strewing all the toys over the floor, waiting for his foster mom to put all the toys back in the toy box and knocking it down again and pulling out all the toys. He also LOVES to play fetch and will happily chase a ball or stuffed toy for as long as he can. When his foster mom’s arm gets tired, he takes a stuffed toy and shake shake shakes it. When he’s done playing, he’ll “hide” the toy in his crate like treasure, and then curl up for a snooze. A very affectionate little boy, he loves to have his face and ears pet, and he’ll roll over for a belly rub, showing the cute white stripe on his chest. He also loves going for rides in the car and taking long walks.

Julius is a big talker, and his form of communication is growling. Sometimes his growling is playful, but other times his growling means he’s unhappy. He doesn’t like to be told what to do, and he has some resource guarding issues we are working hard to correct. If he thinks he’s going to be hurt, his growling will get very scary sounding, but as soon as he feels comfortable again, he gives lots of kisses. Because of these issues, he wouldn’t do well in a home with children; but teenagers would be fine. Julius is learning that it’s fun to play with other doxies, but he’s really just focused on his person, so he could be an "only dog". He is NOT good with cats or other small animals.

Neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccinations, Julius is crate trained, dog-door savvy and perfectly house trained. If you would like to meet Julius, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Julius is $200.00.

Name: Ricky
Age: 2 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard  17 lbs.

Name: Lucy
Age: 2 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard 17 lbs.

If you love the standard dachshunds, you are going to fall head over heels for Ricky and Lucy.

Named for the stars of the 1950’s sitcom, “I Love Lucy”, this Ricky and Lucy are victims of the economic melt-down in California .  Their owners moved away and abandoned them.  They were found taking refuge in the crawl space under a neighbor’s porch.  They had evicted a family of opossums and were not discovered for several days.  Ricky and Lucy were frightened and confused, but the neighbor was able to lure them out of their safe-haven with food.  Efforts to locate their missing owners were unsuccessful.  The house where they had lived before was now empty.  Ricky and Lucy are in a rescue foster home waiting for a new family to fall in love with them and take them home.

They are crate trained, and learning the dog door and the necessary skills to become reliably house trained.  They get along with other dachshunds.  They walk well on leashes and are good in the car.  They correct well when told “no” or to stop doing something they shouldn’t.  They are affectionate and devoted to each other.  It’s very obvious that they are littermates. Unfortunately, their affection does not extend to cats or other small pets.  No cats, rodents, reptiles, or birds can be living in the same residence with them.  They are not too keen on bigger dogs either.

Applicants need to be able to keep them on a schedule so they can maintain their good potty habits.  We are looking for a mature family with children over 10 years old.  Working families are fine as Ricky and Lucy can keep each other company while the family is out and about.  These are very loving doxies.  Not only do they love each other and cuddle and groom each other, they are very docile with people and generous with their kisses.  They like to be held and cuddled, and they are hopeful that one day they will earn the privilege of sleeping in the big bed with their people.  For now, they sleep together in an extra large dog bed in the master bedroom.

Ricky and Lucy are very healthy. Their vaccines are up-to-date and they have been microchipped.  If you can provide a loving home for Ricky and Lucy, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Ricky and Lucy is $500.00 for both.
(Two payments of $250.00 would also be acceptable.)

Name: Candy Cane
Age: 5 years
Color: Red Double Dapple
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

When Candy’s back went out, her owners did nothing for her to two entire weeks.  They forced her to stay outside in the cold day and night, dragging her back legs behind her, becoming bruised and bloody.  Finally, they took pity on her and sent out an e-mail message to several dachshund rescue groups asking for assistance to find another home for Candy.  SCDR responded immediately, arranged for transport from Northern California , and took Candy into Rescue within 24 hours.

During the next few days, Candy was examined by our very knowledgeable vet, given medication, and put on crate rest.  The following week, Candy was treated with acupuncture.  Candy was soon able to stand on all four feet and began to learn how to walk again.  Since then, each day she gets physical therapy and is getting better and better.  The wounds and bruises on her rear legs and feet have healed nicely too.

Candy is crate trained and knows the doggie door.  Her house training is almost perfect.  She has even mastered going up and down the ramp to the back yard without her feet slipping out from under her.  She is definitely on the road to a full recovery.  She needs a family willing to keep her on a potty schedule so she can continue to improve her house training skills.  Stay-at-home moms/dads, or folks who work from home, would be best for her.  She needs a home that is all on one level with no stairs and just a step or two that can be easily ramped to make it easy for her to navigate in and out the door.  She cannot do stairs at all.

Candy gets along great with other small dogs.  She likes gentle children over 8 years old, and enjoys playing with toys. We don’t know how she would behave around cats.  Candy is the consummate lap dog.  She loves to cuddle and get belly rubs.  She very much wants to sleep in the big bed under the covers with her person.  She would be fine as an “only dog” as long as she was not left alone for long periods of time.  A male dachshund companion would be fine too.

Candy is young, now healthy, current on vaccines, and microchipped.  Her teeth are perfect.  If you are interested in Candy, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Candy is $250.00.

Name: Pilgrim
Age: 3 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Micro Mini – 8 lbs.

Pilgrim has been in foster care for the last two years, because his owner passed away, and wanted Dachshund Rescue to care for him until the end of his years.  Unfortunately, during the process of the Probate of the owner's Estate, greedy family members did not want him to benefit from his owner’s intentions.  We have recently been authorized by the court to allow this beautiful dachshund the opportunity to find a new, loving home.

Pilgrim is very tiny and beautiful, and he is such a love. He is content to sit in the middle of his huge bed, and hog it all to himself, or he cuddles up with another doxie family member, but like any dachshund, he longs to sleep in the big bed.  Pilgrim is also very mischievous, snooping everywhere in the house, in the yard, in every bed, crate, nook and cranny.  He is somewhat shy at first, and you must earn his trust, but a more loving dog you could not ask for.

Pilgrim still needs some work on his potty habits.  He is crate trained, doggy door trained, walks nicely on a leash and is 95% house trained. Even though he uses the doggy door, and potties every time you go out with him, he is still working on going out on his own.  His foster mom thinks he gets mad when he is left behind while she is busy doing something else.

Pilgrim needs an adults-only home.  He is safe with cats and other small pets.  He needs a dachshund companion, preferably and older female to “mother” him when his humans must be away from home.  He is current on shots, very healthy, microchipped, and now waiting now for his forever home.

If you can give Pilgrim a real good home, please contact Dawn at dawnaa@pacbell.net.  A home check and completed adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Pilgrim is $250.00.

Name: Tulip
Age: 1 year
Color: Tricolor
Coat: Medium Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size:  Tweenie - 14 lbs.

This little flower was left on a nice lady’s front porch.  After trying in vain to find her people, the nice lady contacted rescue and got her to us.  Poor Tulip had been bitten in the face by another dog—she is very lucky she didn’t lose her eye! Other than that, she is a healthy young dog.

Tulip seems to be a mix of longhaired dachshund, spaniel and min pin. The size of a tweenie, she has the ears and coat of a longhaired dachshund, the markings of a miniature pinscher and the face and sweet disposition of a small spaniel. She has longer legs, so she would be a good choice for a family with stairs in her home.

Calm, quiet and gentle, this sweet little girl is the most adorable doggie we’ve seen in quite some time.  She is learning how to play with the other dogs and seems to enjoy their company, but she would be fine as an “only dog”, especially if she lived with someone who was home much of the time.  She is very devoted to her foster mom and follows her around all day.

We think Tulip would make a great family dog, as long as the children were gentle with her.  She sleeps peacefully in her crate, but she would love to sleep in the same room with her people, maybe even in the big bed!  She is scared of cats, silly thing.  With time and exposure, she would probably do very well in a home with kitties.

Spayed, vaccinated, house trained and crate trained, Tulip is ready for her forever home. If you would like to meet her, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Tulip is $250.00.

Name: Madeline
Age: 3 Years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

When poor Madeline was brought to a high-kill shelter as a stray, she had been in labor for several days, with a breach puppy caught in her birth canal. The shelter vets did a Caesarian section, but none of the puppies could be saved. After she was spayed, fully vaccinated and microchipped, the shelter gave her to rescue so she could find a good home.

Madeline’s personality is as beautiful as her soulful brown eyes and her soft, silky coat. Although she wasn’t able to mother her puppies, she takes charge of the other young doxies in her foster home, cleaning them, cuddling with them and teaching them manners. Her true love is her person, though—if she had her druthers, she’d be camped out on a lap 24/7. Affectionate, spunky and sweet, Madeline is very loving and gives lots of kisses and nose nibbles.

The ideal situation for Madeline would be in a quiet home with people who are retired or otherwise home much of the time, preferably with at least one other doxie for companionship. She would not do well in an apartment or with people who were gone a lot. She isn’t great with cats, but she seems to like gentle, well-behaved children. She is housetrained and knows how to use the doggie door.

If you would like to meet Madeline, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Madeline is $275.

Name: Riley
Age: 7 years
Color: Black & Tan Dapple
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini - 11 lbs.

If you love dapple dachshunds, then you are going to love Riley.  He is sweet and adorable.

Riley came into rescue because his previous owner abandoned him at the grooming shop.  Efforts to get his people to come back and claim him failed, and after more than a month living at the groomer’s, Animal Control gave the groomer permission to place Riley into Rescue.

Riley deserves to have a real home again and to be with a family that is going to love and cherish him.  He is house trained and very well behaved.  Riley is good with children over 10 years old.  He comes when called (a big plus if you know dachshunds) and gets very excited when he sees his leash and knows he is going for a walk.  He enjoys going for rides in the car too.  We don’t know if he is safe with cats.

Riley has current vaccines and he is microchipped.  We are looking for a family who can give Riley a lot of attention as he is starved for affection and need lots of love.  Riley would also like you to know that he would enjoy the company of a non-alpha female doxie.  He loves to cuddle, and sleeps under the covers in the big bed.  Are you retired and enjoy traveling in your RV?  Then Riley wants to be your dog.

If you can provide a good home for Riley, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Riley is $175.00.

Name: Sadie
Age: 7 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Chubby Mini.

Sadie spent her first four years of life living in a breeding cage.  When she was a puppy, she tore her nose on the cage, so she has a little tear on her nose which doesn't give her any problem.  When they were finished using her for breeding, she was sold to a nice couple who found Sadie was still carrying a still-born puppy in her womb when they took her to the vet to be spayed.  Sadie had a good home for a couple of years, but then two human babies came along and the family could not give Sadie the attention she deserved, so they turned her over to Rescue to find just the right home.

Sadie is a darling girl with soft brown eyes that dance and shine with joy.  She was never leash trained, but  she is learning the joys of going for walks.  She is safe with children over 10 years old.  She loves to held, cuddled, and to sleep in the big bed under the covers with her humans.  Sadie is a snuggler and wants to occupy any available lap, whether you are working at the computer, watching television, or reading a book.

When Sadie came into rescue, she had a serious bladder infection leading to many indoor potty accidents.  After two rounds of antibiotics and crate rest, Sadie is now house trained once again.  Regular trips outside and rewards for proper potty habits are the secret of her continued success.  She will potty on piddle pads on rainy days or if someone can't get home in time to let her out in a timely fashion.

Recently, Sadie diagnosed with the early stages of Cushings disease.  With proper medication, she is on her way into remission and the vet expects Sadie to live a normal lifespan of 14 to 17 years.  She will need a maintenance dose of her meds twice a week for the rest of her life.  Anyone who has ever had a Cushings dog will tell you it's really no big deal.  We look at it as a very minor inconvenience.

Sadie is wonderful with other dogs and really wants a home with another dog to play with.  She likes to play with toys.  She has no issues with cats that we know of.  Sadie would be perfect for condo living.  She would like a nice retired lady or gentleman to cuddle with her and give her cuddles and belly rubs.

Sadie’s vaccinations are up-to-date, she’s been microchipped, and she is healthy.  If you are interested in Sadie, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Sadie is $175.00.

Name: Mimi
Age: 6 months
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Micro-Mini – 6 lbs.

Mimi is an adorable "chuweenie" puppy, with big doe eyes and dachshund ears that stand up.  She has the sweetest disposition we’ve seen in a long time.  When the call came in from the Central California SPCA in Fresno about Mimi, we knew we had to take her into Rescue and help this puppy.

Mimi was dumped at the shelter on St. Patrick’s Day by a couple that said that Mimi had a broken right rear leg and they could not afford the vet bill.  No explanation was give as to how this petite puppy managed to get a broken leg.  Shelter volunteers took one look at this tiny, 6 pound, angel and called us immediately.  Within minutes a transport was set up, and by noon the next day Mimi was in Orange County with a 4:00 p.m. vet appointment.  X-rays revealed a break in her right femur right where the bone fits into the hip socket.  This is a very unusual place for a break and in our vet’s opinion Mimi had to have been physically abused in order for this type of break to have happened.  The vet prescribed a few weeks of crate rest, and now Mimi is ready for a new and wonderful home.  No sign of the injury or abuse remain.

Mimi looks like a taller dachshund with perky ears.  She has all the characteristics of a dachshund, but her ears stand up like a bunny.  She has a lush coat with a lovely tail.  Her teeth are so white you’ll need sunglasses to look at them.  We love her adorable dachshund face and those bunny ears, don’t you?  Mimi is timid when meeting new people or dogs, but warms up quickly.  She gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home.  And she loves people too.  We don’t know how she behaves toward cats.  Her foster family says that she’s the easiest dog they've ever seen.

Mimi is a puppy and is learning to be house trained.  She has only had a couple of accidents since arriving at her foster home.  She is crate trained and goes into her crate voluntarily to enjoy a treat or take a little nap.  She is learning how to walk nicely on a leash.  She is fine on car rides.  She loves to cuddle and snuggle and would not mind being invited to spend the night in the big bed with you.  Mimi just wants to be loved all the time.  Mimi is now healthy, microchipped, and her vaccinations are up-to-date.

If you are interested in adopting Mimi, please contact Dena at (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Mimi $300.00.

Name: Maxie
Age: 6 years
Color: Red
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 12 lbs.

Maxie is a very handsome mini dachshund – his picture really doesn’t do him justice.  His original owner was a young woman who became terminally ill and was placed in a nursing home.  She gave Maxie to a friend, but it was not a good fit.  Very young children, two cats, and the chaos of an active household changed Maxie from a calm lap dog into a nervous, snappy dog.  Maxie enjoys the quiet life, and we promised to find him just the right home.

Maxie is very shy with strangers especially men, but once he gets to know you, he loves to be petted and cuddled and he gives wonderful, soft kisses.  His fur, especially his ears, is like silk and he is a wonderful couch companion and bed buddy.  He loves to go for walks and is generally up for anything his person wants to do.  However, Maxie can also be possessive of his food and treats and he will snap if he feels infringed upon - therefore, we will not place him in a home with children or other pets.  He does not like cats at all.  Caution should be taken if children visit.

Maxie is crate trained, house trained, and dog-door savvy.  He loves going for walks and gets quite excited when he sees his harness and leash.  He travels well in the car.  He is fine with other dachshunds, especially those of the female persuasion.

Maxie would be a perfect companion for someone who is retired or works from home, and he much prefers to be around his person at all times.  Retired and travel by RV?  Maxie is ready for a road-trip.

Maxie’s vaccines are up-to-date, he’s been microchipped, and he is very healthy.  If you are interested in Maxie, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Maxie is $200.00.

Name: Winnie Marie
Age: 2 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size:  Micro Mini – 8 lbs.

Next to the word “adorable” in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Winnie Marie.  Winnie’s original owners allowed their child to harass and abuse Winnie until one day, Winnie fought back and bit the child.  A friend of the family took Winnie away from them and subsequently turned Winnie over to Rescue to find a home where no one would ever hurt her again.

Winnie is a sweet, quiet girl who is loving and playful.  She is shy and a bit defensive when meeting new people, but if given some time to approach at her own pace, she is very sweet.  She likes men, and would be very happy in a home with one or two of her very own again.  She loves to give kisses, cuddle in her person’s lap, sleep under the covers in the big bed, and she enjoys lots of petting and belly rubs.  Winnie is 100% house trained and is dog-door savvy.  Winnie thinks baby-gates are for sissies, so extra vigilance when opening doors to the street is required.

Winnie walks well on a leash, and she likes to go in the car.  She would especially appreciate being in an “only dog” family, but would be fine with another dachshund (male preferred).  We do not know if Winnie is cat-safe.  Due to her past experiences with a sadistic child, we would prefer not to place her in a home with children.

Winnie is in good health.  Her vaccinations are all up-to-date.  She has been microchipped.  She is a good eater, loves her food prepared just the right way, with a bit of chicken broth.  She doesn’t care for biscuits or treats.  No junk food for this gal.

Just one look into her sparkling brown eyes and you will lose your heart to her.  If you are interested in Winnie, please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home-check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Winnie is $300.00.

Name: Moose
Age: 18 months
Color: Chocolate & Tan
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard – 30 lbs.

Moose was unceremoniously dumped from his previous owner’s car in the middle of the parking lot at the Simi Valley Animal Holding Facility.  Witnesses said the “coward” never even got out of his car to see if his dog made it safely inside the shelter.  Coincidently, there was a Rescue volunteer just arriving at the shelter when all this occurred, so Moose was immediately rescued and went home with our volunteer.  Though he didn’t know it at the time, this was Moose’s lucky day.

Judging by the bright whiteness of his teeth and naïve, youthful spirit, we think Moose is not much more than a year and a half old.  He is a 30 pound, large frame, standard teddy bear.  He would not harm a fly.  He is a chocolate long hair with shorter than average length hair, but it does take about two years for a longhair to grow his coat completely.  Moose is still a puppy by our standards.

Moose is an innocent pup who has truly lost his way and does not know what he did wrong to be abandoned, but none-the-less holds no grudge.  He only desperately wants a permanent home where he can give and receive love by the boat load.  He is very playful and fun loving.  He gets along with all people and would love to have a female doxie companion.  He is totally socialized.  We would feel comfortable placing Moose in a home with children over 5 years old.

Moose challenges no one and craves attention and tummy rubs.  He appears to be housebroken and has very quickly learned the dog door.  He wants to please, and he seems pretty smart and obedient. He does sometimes have that thick, stubborn, headstrong, selective hearing problem that we all know plagues the dachshund breed.  We think he is very trainable, because when you show caring and leadership, he wants to follow.  In fact, he follows his foster dad all over the house at every opportunity.  He wants to learn commands.  He craves attention and desperately wants to know what to do next and where his loyalty should be placed.

Moose is in excellent health.  His vaccinations are all up-to-date.  If you’ve had previous experience with a longhaired dachshund, it would be a plus as he needs daily brushing and periodic grooming to look his absolute best.  Moose walks well on a leash and loves car rides.  Just one look into his sparkling brown eyes and you will lose your heart.  He is a very special boy.

If you are interested in Moose, please contact Ralph at ottorig3@gmail.com or call (805) 857-8590.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Moose is $300.00.

Name: Dee-Dee
Age: 9 months
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini - 11 lbs.

Dee-Dee's original owners loved her, but they didn't really take care of her.  She came into rescue very shy and always hiding behind her doxie father.  We split the two dogs up, and Dee-Dee’s true personality is now blossoming.  She is becoming much bolder as she gains confidence.

Dee-Dee has begun initiating play with the other dogs in her foster home.  She is extremely affectionate with people and loves to sit on laps.  She has a lot of youthful energy.  As she gets more comfortable, she is becoming more puppy-like.  She absolutely adores going for walks.

Dee-Dee has a lovely silky coat and a beautiful face.  She is crate trained, but she will whine unless she has another dog in the crate with her.  Her housebreaking is still a work-in-progress, but she is coming along nicely.  We think Dee-Dee would be workable with cats.  She could also go to a home with older, respectful children.  She would really love to go to have a young playful male dog as a companion.

When Dee-Dee arrived, she had never been to a vet or had a single vaccination.  She is now spayed and up-to-date on her vaccinations.  She has also had a retained baby tooth removed.

If you are interested in Dee-Dee, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Dee-Dee is $300.00.

Name: Chaplin
Age: 8 Years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 8 lbs.

Chaplin, a feisty dachshund/min-pin mix, was rescued from the particularly nasty, East Valley Shelter in Los Angeles .  Caged with several other (bigger) dogs, he soon showed them that what dachshunds are made of.  The staff was very happy when Rescue bailed him out of there.  Chaplin was happy about that too.

Chaplin, named for the actor/comedian Charlie Chaplin, is a funny little boy with very silly ears—they’re oversized and wobble around on the side of his head, like they’re waving. A playful little boy, he enjoys cuddling and kissing his person’s face. He can be jealous and competitive over food and attention, so he'd like an "only dog" home please.  Chaplin loves to burrow under the covers and sleeps in his own little bed. Once he is snuggled in his little bed, do not disturb.  He can be a bit of a curmudgeon if doesn't get his beauty sleep.   He prefers the company of women and wants to be somebody's one and only love.  He is not safe with children and precautions should be taken when there are children and food around.  He’s okay with a dog-savvy cat.

Neutered, current on his vaccinations and crate-trained, Chaplin is ready for his forever home. His ideal home would have a single, retired lady who knows how to deal with a senior dog with a strong personality .  If you are interested in Chaplin , please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required. If you are interested in fostering him only, let us know.

The adoption fee for Chaplin is only $125.00.

Sophie was picked up stray and taken to the Bakersfield shelter.  She waited and waited, but no one came to claim her as theirs.  We were absolutely delighted to rescue her and find her a wonderful new home.

Sophie is house trained and knows the dog door.  She's only had one accident since she went to her foster home.  She gets along with other dogs, likes gentle children over 5 years old, and enjoys playing with toys.  She is not safe with cats unfortunately.

Sophie is the consummate lap dog.  She lives to cuddle and get belly rubs.  We can tell that at some point in her life she was someone’s special baby as she knows all about cuddling under the covers in the big bed.

Sophie is young, healthy, current on vaccines, and her teeth are in excellent shape.  It looks like she had regular dental cleanings.  Sophie is very generous with her kisses.  She greets everyone she meets with a happy tail and lots of warm, soft kisses.  We think she is something special.

Max deserves to have a real home again and to be with a family that is going to love and cherish him.  He is house trained and very well behaved.  Max is good with children over 10 years old.  He comes when called (a big plus if you know dachshunds) and gets very excited when he sees his leash and knows he is going for a walk.  He enjoys going for rides in the car too.  We don’t know if he is safe with cats.  He would enjoy having a female doxie companion.

Max has current vaccines and is microchipped.  We are looking for a family who can give Max a lot of attention as he is starved for affection and needs lots of love.  He can be protective of his food bowl, so he needs to be fed separately from other dogs and with supervision.

If you can provide a good home Max , please contact Dena via email  or call (562) 694-6868.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Max is $175.00.

Transport to Southern California is possible if necessary.
Name: Chloe
Age:  2-3 years
Color: Chocolate Dapple
Coat: Semi-Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini –12 lbs.

Chloe is a 2-3 year-old dachshund/spaniel mix who weighs about 12 pounds.  She has medium length long hair and stunningly beautiful amber eyes. Her coat is chocolate with hints of blond.  She has all the features of a dachshund, but she is slightly taller.  Her family lost their home and trusted Rescue to find her a wonderful home.

Chloe is an incredibly affectionate dog who gets along well with other dogs. She also does very well with children and adjusts easily to a new environment. She still has the playfulness of a puppy and likes to interact with both humans and dogs. She also is quite a runner and will obey voice commands in the park. On walks in the neighborhood she is highly curious and will walk up to every front door, if allowed.

She is generally well-behaved in the house, but still has minor potty issues. However, if she is taken out on a regular schedule she doesn’t appear to have a problem. She likes to sleep with other dogs or humans.  Outside of the house, she likes to soak in the sun or explore a back yard. She seems somewhat oblivious to cats, birds and squirrels.

Chloe will make a great pet for either a single person or a family. She is highly adaptable to any environment, but she does require attention and a regular bathroom schedule.  She has no known health issues and she is up-to-date on all of her vaccinations.  She is very active and enjoys walks quite a bit.

If you are interested in Chloe, please contact Alex at alex.paul@yahoo.com .  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Chloe is $250.00.

Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 9 lbs.

Name: Georgia
Age: 5 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Tweenie – 9 lbs.

Bubba and Georgia have been in foster care for the last two years, because their owner passed away, and wanted Dachshund Rescue to care for them until the end of their years.  Unfortunately, during the process of the Probate of the owner's Estate, greedy family members did not want them to benefit from their owner’s intentions.  We have recently been authorized by the court to allow these beautiful dachshunds the opportunity to find forever loving homes.  We lovingly call them the “Farkel Family” and they come running when their foster mom calls them that.  Bubba and Georgia must be placed together as they are a bonded pair.  Pilgrim is their son, and he could be placed with these two if someone wants to adopt three.  (See “Pilgrim” below.)

All of the Farkel’s are crate trained, doggy door trained, walk nicely on a leash and are potty trained.

Bubba and Georgia are tiny and beautiful. These two do not have a shy bone in their little bodies, make friends with both humans and other dogs very easily.  Both of them love to play with all kinds of toys, and are very competitive when playing. They will wear your arm out while you throw the ball, throw the stuffed animal, etc. They are very respectful of their toys, do not chew or destroy them like so many of their kind! They also are very good on a leash, enjoy the outdoors and love their lap time. These two could probably win a wienie race handily; they are very fast when chasing toys, and love to play tug-o-war between themselves, as well as with anyone else, dog or human. We have actually seen them stand still with each end of a toy in their mouths for several minutes at a time. This brother and sister must go to a home together. Bubba and Georgia are fine with older children, and are safe with cats and other small pets.

Bubba and Georgia are current on shots, are very healthy, and waiting now for their forever home.  If you can provide a good home for both of them, please contact Dawn at dawnaa@pacbell.net.  A home check and completed adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Bubba & Georgia is $300.00.

Name: Milo
Age: 3 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 12 lbs.
This dog is being fostered in the S.F. Bay Area
Transport to Southern California is possible if necessary.

Milo is a wonderful “chuweenie” who is a victim of foreclosure and was taken to the pound by his owners.  When he first came to foster care he was a very frightened dog and would shake uncontrollably. After some initial problems with excessive marking, he settled nicely into his foster home with two other dogs.  He had to wear a “belly band” for three weeks, but once he got used to his surroundings, he had no accidents. He clearly thrives in a stable, attentive home.

Milo loves to run and play, but also loves to sleep.  He will enjoy sleeping with you in bed and once he’s down for the night, he doesn’t wake up or move a lot.  Like both chihuahuas and dachshunds, he loves to burrow under the covers.  He hates getting up in the morning unless there is food involved.  He thrives on human attention, making him a great lap dog.  He is very active on walks, but needs to be (slightly) monitored when other dogs approach as he may get excitable.  His foster home is working on socializing him with a pack of dogs.  Now that his fearfulness is waning, he’ll soon be regularly walked on a trail with another pack of dogs for an hour a day.  He recently had his first day with the group of dogs and quickly became best friends with a poodle.

We don’t know how he is with children or cats, but he does well with other dogs.  He also knows what “give me a kiss” means and isn’t afraid of showing you affection.

Milo is in great shape and appears to be extremely healthy. His vaccines are up-to-date.  If you can provide a loving home for Milo , please fill out an adoption application and e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.

The adoption fee for Milo $200.00.

Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Name: Fritz
Age: 2 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie - 14 lbs.

Fritz and Roxann were  picked up stray and taken to the Kings County Animal Shelter near Fresno .  Efforts to locate their families failed, so shelter volunteers contacted Rescue and we jumped at the chance to take them both into our program to find them a great home.

The funny thing is, Fritz and Roxann didn’t know each other prior to being transported to their foster home in Southern California , but they bonded to each other on the long car-ride and you’d never know they were not lifelong buddies.  Wherever Fritz goes, Roxann follows, and vice versa.  They eat together, play together, sleep together, and go outside to potty together.  We’ve never seen two doxies so in love.

Fritz and Roxann are in excellent health, microchipped, and their vaccinations are all up-to-date.  They are still very puppylike and can get into mischief if left to their own devices for long periods of time.  They truly enjoy the comforts of home and the comradery of family, both canine and human.  They both love to be held and cuddled.  They are crate trained, 90% house trained, and know how to use a dog door.  They truly enjoy going for long walks and are good in the car.

We are looking for someone who wants dogs who are very loving and affectionate.  Folks who work part-time or from home would be perfect.  They are very safe with children over 5 years old.  They are affectionate with gentle children.  We don’t know how they behave around cats or other small pets.

If you can provide a good home for Fritz and Roxann, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Fritz and Roxann is $400.00 for both.

Name: Reggie
Age: 1 year
Color: Red
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Hi, my name is Reggie, and all I want for my birthday is my very own home!  I will be one year old on May 15th, and I so want to have my very own person to take me home, love me, scratch my belly and ears, feed me my favorite food and take me to bed at night.

I am crate trained, doggy door savvy, eat very slow and nice, love to play with toys, run like a rabbit around the back yard, lay in the sun, burrow in my blankets, kiss my foster parents, play with my foster family members and would love to have a brother or sister of my own in my new home.

My foster mom is teaching me “no barking” but I don’t really bark much, only when strangers knock on the door or enter “my” backyard.  I try so hard to be a good boy, and I wag my tail all the time, I am very obedient, come when called and don’t mind being alone for several hours.  I would be content living in a small house or condo, or I think it would be fun if I could go for rides in an RV and travel the country, I am up to anything!

I have a very nice personality and I am oh so sweet, my foster mom said I would make a perfect transition into a new home, and make someone very happy.

If you give me a real good home, please contact Dawn at dawnaa@pacbell.net.  A home check and completed adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Reggie is $300.00.

Name: Dieter
Age: 2 Years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 13 lbs.

Dieter was dumped in the shelter by a backyard breeder who didn’t want him anymore. He’s an adorable little guy, but the breeder neglected to socialize him, so Dieter was very nervous and uncomfortable with people when he came into rescue. Since then, he has blossomed into a happy, friendly little guy who loves people and treats his mama like a goddess. If left to his own devices, he sits next to his person all day long and follows his foster mom around like a little shadow. He can be a little cautious about being picked up, but once you gain his trust, he'll relax.

Dieter's favorite time of day is bedtime. He runs right up the doggie steps, onto the bed, and waits for his person to get in bed with him. After washing his person's arm, he'll curl up into a tiny ball right next to you. He will also sleep in a crate, especially if he's crated with another doxie. A very silly little doxie, Dieter loves to frisk and prance around, especially before mealtimes. He'll toss a stuffed toy into the air, catch it and run around the house with it. When he decides he wants to play with another dog, he rolls over onto his back, wiggles his paws and tail frantically, and lick the other dog's mouth. It's adorable.

We discovered that Dieter cannot be an "only dog". The stress of being totally responsible for “guarding” his home or his person is just too much for him. However, if he is part of a pack of doxies, he’s just fine—he likes it when other doxies are in charge. He loves to play with toys and other dogs, and when it’s time for a nap, he cuddles in a puppy pile with his pack. He does especially well with male dogs, but a feisty little female would be a fine companion for him, too. Dieter is extremely submissive, so he would do well with another doxie who is alpha. He would not do well in a home with cats or children under 12 years old.

Dieter learned how to use the doggie door right away and seems to be totally housetrained. He sleeps peacefully in his crate and jumps in right away when called. Neutered and current on his vaccinations, Dieter would love to meet his forever people. If you would like to meet him, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Dieter is $300.00.

Name: Henri
Age: 2 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie - 15 lbs.

Henri came into the Camarillo shelter as a stray.  His owners never even bothered looking for him at the shelter, so unfortunately we don’t have any background information on him.  He was adopted out to a private party and returned within a couple of days, because he went after her pet birds.

Henri is a very loving and energetic boy.  He is a bit underweight, but his foster parents are working on beefing him up.  Henri gets along wonderfully with all the other animals in his foster home which includes four cats, another dachshund and four birds.  He even gets along with the wild birds that forage for bugs in the back yard.

Some of Henri's favorite things include facial massages, long walks on the beach, and soft beds to cuddle in at night.  Henry is also crate trained and will run into his crate when you say "Kennel".  He has had to be crated during work hours, because he gets into mischief otherwise. He will need an owner that is not afraid to make rules and set limitations.

Henri will chase the cats, but also try to play with them. Sometimes, he will get so worked up that he knocks over the potted plants and then plays in the dirt.  He can also get a little rough when playing “wrestle mania”. The good news is that that he will stop and play nice when you tell him to.  His new family should seriously consider taking Henri to obedience training.  He is very eager to learn new things.  His foster parents are currently working on “sit” and “lay down”.  He does pull on the leash, but will stop pulling if you correct him.  Henri appears to be 100% house trained and likes to go potty in the grass.

We think Henri will be a wonderful companion to just about anyone. He would be safe with children over 8 years old.  He's a very friendly dog.  He has no issues with other dogs or new people.  He is very playful, not an alpha personality.  He loves walks, but needs a strong leash and harness to prevent him from getting too excited and pulling.  Henri likes to chew his blankets and carry them all over the house, even dragging them outside.  (Maybe we should have named him Linus - from the Peanuts cartoon strip.)  He is not keen on eating dog food.  We think perhaps because he was fed from the table in his previous life or as a stray living off people food scraps.

Henri is up-to-date on his vaccines and is healthy.  If you are interested in Henri, please contact Ralph at ottorig3@gmail.com or call (805) 857-8590.  A home-check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Henri is $275.00.

Name: Davey
Age: 4 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Davey was brought to the shelter after he was hit by a car.  He languished in the medical ward for two weeks while the shelter people tried to locate his owner.  When we rescued Davey from the shelter, he had a broken right front leg that had not been treated for more than two weeks, and the technicians at the shelter stuck an I.V. in the broken leg adding insult to injury.  We took Davey to the vet immediately after we got him out of the shelter.  It was treated, but after weeks of wearing a cast, the vet told us the damage was irreversible due to serious nerve damage.  He can no longer walk on it correctly.  But in true dachshund fashion, when life gave him lemons, Davey made lemonade.  He has learned to walk on three legs, using the disabled leg like a crutch.

Davey is healthy, crate trained, house trained, and knows the dog door.  He is up-to-date on shots and is microchipped.  He really loves to eat (don’t all dachshunds?).  When he is not eating, he loves to sun himself on the patio.  Davey is very well socialized and is a very willing wrestling partner.  Going for walks is a bit of a challenge as he needs to have his damaged leg wrapped to prevent it from getting scraped up by the hard sidewalk.  He loves going for car rides.  He rolls over on his back begging for belly rubs at every opportunity.  He wants to be with his person to be held and babied.  He would like a home where he can sleep in the big bed with his person.  Davey is one of the most loving doxies we have ever rescued.

Davey is safe with children over 5 years old and enjoys their company, especially if they want to pet him or rub his belly.  We do not know if he is cat safe.  Davey would really like a home with another dachshund who likes to play and cuddle.  He would be a great apartment or condo dog too.  He needs a home that is all on one level with no stairs and just a step or two that can be easily ramped to make it easy for him to navigate in and out the door.  He should not do stairs at all.

If you are interested in Davey, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Davey is $175.00.

Name: Veronica Love
Age:  6 years
Color: Black and Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Micro Mini – 8 lbs.

Veronica (a.k.a. Ronnie) was turned over to rescue when her family lost their home and could not find a pet-friendly apartment.  This tiny girl is so sweet and loving, it is almost inconceivable that they could not find a way to keep her.  Alas, they could not.

Ronnie is a sweet, little girl who only wants to be loved by her person.  She wants to snuggle with you all night under the covers in the big bed.  She is crate trained, house trained, walks well on a leash, and is well socialized.  She enjoys running and playing with other non-aggressive dachshunds.  She is good with children over 10 years old, especially little girls, and seems to be cat-safe (most cats are bigger than Ronnie anyway).  She would not do well with people who are gone to work all day.  She needs someone who either works from home or works part-time.  She is a great little traveler who enjoys going for rides in the car.  She would be a wonderful RV dog.  Ronnie is not an apartment or condo dog.  She needs a doggy door with access to a secure yard.  She does not like to be left alone for long periods of time.

Ronnie deserves a good home with people who are going love and cherish her for the rest of her life.  She is in good health.  Her vaccines are all current.  She has a million kisses for your face and cannot wait to give them to you.

If you are interested in Ronnie, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Ronnie is $200.00.

Name: Ginger
Age: 2 years

Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Roger and Ginger are another casualty of today’s economy.  Their owners lost their home and gave Roger and Ginger to some friends; but the friends already had two dogs and Roger and Ginger were two too many for them to handle.  Luckily, they contacted Rescue and we were able to help Roger and Ginger, and now they are in a foster home to await their new forever home.

Roger and Ginger like the other dachshunds in their foster home, and get along well with all of them.  They play with toys and love to play “wrestle mania”.  They love to give kisses and cuddle in any available lap.  They sleep under their blankie in a big crate together, and they enjoy lots of petting and belly rubs.

They have received all their vaccines and they are very healthy.  These are active dogs that need a family with an active lifestyle where they can take Roger and Ginger on brisk walks, camping trips, dog beach, etc. They need a home with a dog-door and a back yard for running and playing.  They are not apartment or condo dogs.  Families with children over 8 years old are encouraged to apply.  We don’t know if they are safe around cats.

If you can provide the type of home and lifestyle Roger and Ginger need, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

Name: Sasha
Age:  2 years
Color: Black and White
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini –10 lbs.

If dogs could talk, little Sasha would have quite a story to tell. She was found on the streets of Los Angeles suffering from hypothermia and wound up at the pound. Our volunteer spotted this sweet little girl on the LA Animal Services website and knew she had to get her out of there.  We readily agreed.

Sasha has been in her foster home for about a month now, and she is improving every day. She has adjusted well, has a good appetite and has started to gain some weight. She gets along very well with her foster sister, also a doxie, and usually tolerates the cat though there is still a bit of growling now and then (on both sides) She seems to be almost completely house trained. If there is a way to get outside to go, she will do so, but hasn't yet warmed up to the doggy door. Sasha enjoys having her own kennel and happily sleeps there at night since her foster mom doesn't want to take a chance of her falling out of the big bed at night.

Sasha has some trouble controlling her movements, especially when she gets excited. Picture a cross between a pinball and a fire engine with no one driving the back end. We aren't sure what caused her physical problems, whether they are neurological or the result of an injury, but we do know that she is a survivor! She is such a trooper, she just keeps on going until she gets where she needs to go.  Sasha is nervous about being picked up, but likes to cuddle, hates baths, and seems a little wary of men - it seems likely she's experienced some abuse in the past.

Sasha gets along well with other dachshunds, and appears to tolerate dog-friendly cats, but would be very happy to be a spoiled little princess.  She wants to sleep in the big bed with her person.  Sasha is the perfect companion for a retired person or someone who works from home who seeks the love and devotion this little dog is so willing to give.  Previous experience with a longhaired dachshund would be a plus, but not essential.

If you are interested in Sasha, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Sasha is $200.00.

Name: Tammy
Age:  10 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Chubby Mini - 14 lbs.

Tammy is a victim of the current mortgage crisis. Sadly, her people lost their home and could not secure pet-friendly living arrangements. This is the second time Tammy has lost a loving home. Fortunately, she is in a wonderful foster home with a loving temporary mom who has helped Tammy with some much-needed weight loss and given her lots of love. Tammy is now a happy, well-adjusted doxie who would love to find her forever home. She doesn’t want to be passed around any more.

Don’t let Tammy’s age fool you—she is very playful! She loves to help her foster mom garden, and she enjoys playing with her foster brother, a big dog, and cuddling with the kitty who lives in her foster home. She’s also very active and enjoys going for long walks, even hikes! But she’s very easygoing and undemanding, and will happily spend a quiet day lazing in the sun.

Tammy is extremely people focused and wants to be right next to her person at all times. She is good with cats (she used to live with them). She is happy to greet everyone and would be fine with respectful children over 5 years old. She does well with other dogs, but really wants to be with her people, so she could be an "only dog" if necessary. Tammy really loves to eat will do anything to get to it—even things one would think a short-legged dachshund incapable of doing. Her new family will need to make certain that Tammy doesn’t eat too much. Her svelte new figure is very becoming!

Spayed and current on her vaccinations, Tammy is in good health. She would be perfect just about any household, but she would especially like to live with people who are home much of the time. She is happy to sleep in her dog bed, but she really loves sleeping in the big bed with her person. Tammy is perfectly housetrained, a rarity for dachshunds.

If you are interested in Tammy, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net. A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Tammy is $125.00.

This dog is being fostered in the S.F. Bay Area
Transport to Southern California is possible if necessary.

Name: Millie
Age: 1.5 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female
Size: Mini – 10 lbs.

Millie was turned in to the SFACC by her owner.  She was so traumatized by the experience, the shelter deemed her unadoptable by the general public, so they contacted Rescue.  Once she was out of the shelter and in a foster home, her behavior improved dramatically.  Millie became the sweet dachshund we always knew she was.  Though she was an “outside dog” in her previous life, she is now enjoying the comforts and privileges of being in the house with her foster brothers and sisters.

Millie was so shy when she first arrived at her foster home, she didn't want to play with the other dogs and she acted like an old dog - just wanting to hide out and sleep in her kennel.  Her four weeks in the shelter had really taken a toll on her.  As she got more and more comfortable, the real Millie has emerged.  She now plays with all the other dogs.  She romps and wrestles with them and loves to get in a good game of chase.  She really enjoys cuddling.  She likes toys and chewies.

Millie's biggest problem is that she will dig under a fence, so she cannot ever be left in yard alone.  (When she dug out at her foster home, she fortunately just hung out in the front yard).  She is not used to being a house dog, so she still gets concerned when strangers come to the house.  Because of this, she would do best in a home without children.

Millie has never been an “only dog”, so she would need some time to adjust to a situation like this.  She would love a playful male buddy (she wants a dog her size - she doesn't like the big dog in her foster home).

If you are interested in Millie, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Millie is $300.00.

Name: Joanna
Age: 3 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 11-12 lbs.

Joanna was abandoned at the vet’s office by people who didn’t want to deal with a dachshund with a back problem.  Although Joanna was making an excellent recovery, her people refused to come back for her and told the vet to put her down.  Instead, he contacted Rescue.  We were delighted to help Joanna continue her rehabilitation and to find her a good home.

As you can see, Joanna is fully recovered.  She would be OK with families with children over 10 years old.  She is friendly toward everyone, but she especially likes little girls who are gentle with her.  She would be fine with a mellow, mini male dachshund companion, no large dogs.  She is also independent and would do well as an "only dog" if necessary.  Unfortunately, Joanna failed the cat-test, she's aggressive toward cats.

Joanna is crate trained, house trained and knows the dog door.  She does not like to go outside to potty if it is raining (what dachshund does?).  Fortunately, it does not rain in Southern California very often.  She responds well to rewards and praise.  She enjoys going for walks, and loves car rides.

Joanna is now in good health.  Her vaccinations are all up-to-date.  She would be a good downstairs apartment or condo dog too.  She needs a home that is all on one level with no stairs and just a step or two that can be easily ramped to make it easy for her to navigate in and out the door.  She would need to be carried up and down any steps to avoid re-injuring her back.

Just one look into her sparkling brown eyes and you will lose your heart to her.  She is a very special doxie girl.  If you can give a good home to Joanna, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Joanna is $200.00.

 Name: Trudi
Age: 3 years
Color: Red
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 17 lbs.

Unwanted and clearly unloved, Trudi was found near a dumpster hunting for food behind the WalMart in Oxnard .  She is still a non-stop eater, because she is used to thinking she does not know where her next meal will come from.  She was all skin and bones when she arrived at her new foster home.

Clearly looking much better now than the emaciated dirty wreck she came into Rescue as, Trudi adores being the center of attention.  She is an alpha dog who needs to be either an “only dog”  or she can be with a mellow, non-alpha male companion.  Either way, she needs to get plenty of attention and exercise.

Trudi loves to go for long walks and will get very attached to her owner and very protective.  She is also very protective of her treats and food amongst other dogs.  This is probably due to having to fight for food in her past.  We think she had at least one litter of puppies before probably escaping from her backyard puppy-mill duties.  She will respond to direction from her owner in the house, but does have a stubborn streak when it comes to sniffing on a walk.  To her credit, she does love to be held and to snuggle in bed with her owner.  However, she will accept sleeping in a dog bed in the master's bedroom if that is her only other option.

Trudi is friendly with all people - just protective of her owner in the presence of other dogs.  She is not safe with children under 12 years old.  We don't know if Trudi is cat friendly.  Applicants should have previous experience with dealing with an "alpha dog" personality and be able to show leadership.  She is healthy,  her vaccines are up-to-date, and her teeth are nice and clean.

This beautiful show-quality girl, with a face that could launch a thousand ships, deserves only the best after what she has been through.  If you are interested in giving Trudi a loving forever home, please contact Ralph at ottorig3@gmail.com or call (805) 857-8590.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Trudi is $250.00.

We estimate he is around 2-3 years old.  He is a sweet and outgoing boy who likes attention and loves nothing more then belly rubs and giving kisses.  He is great on walks and outgoing with strangers.  He enjoys car rides and going places with his people.  He is protective and would be a good watch dog too.  Although is he not at all aggressive with other dogs, he does not like bouncy puppies or big energetic dogs.  He is really more of a people dog.  He has a nice mix of energetic and couch potato.

Theodore would not do well in a home where he is alone all day or in an apartment as he does have some separation anxiety.  He is not destructive, but he will bark if he feels left out of family things.  He is housebroken as long as he has access to the outside and he does not mark territory.

If you are interested in adopting Theodore, please visit www.pupsandpals.net for more info and the adoption application.  Also, please note that we are all volunteers, so it may take 3-5 days to process your application, but you will hear back from us.

The adoption fee for Theodore is $350.00

This dog is being fostered in the S.F. Bay Area.
Name: Zeke
Age: 7 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: “Tweenie”, 15 1bs

Zeke is a real gem of a dog! He is a black and brown long-haired dachshund. His coat is soooo soft and thick, fun to pet and brush; luckily he likes being brushed and is the perfect gentleman in the bath.  Zeke is completely people-oriented and adores following people around, curling up in laps whenever possible and getting petted, but is also okay chilling out nearby. He LOVES giving kisses! Zeke would really like to sleep on the bed amongst his people’s pillows, but has contented himself with his doggie bed on the floor next to foster brother’s bed. He does NOT like crates.

Zeke is a very happy dog; his little tail is always wagging. He is generally quiet and calm, although he excitedly races around at mealtimes - so funny! Zeke is good with our dog although he isn’t playful; he seems to enjoy doggie companionship but would be happy being an only dog (more pettings!). He does warn off strange dogs when they get too close, so he is not a dog-park sort of dog. It is unknown how he would be with cats, but I would guess fine, as he has no detectable prey drive.  We also don’t know how he would be around children, but he does let adults handle him all over without complaint and rolls belly-up, tail wagging when people reach down to pick him up.

Zeke is house-trained, walks beautifully on leash, likes riding in the car, and listens well to correction.  At 7 years old, Zeke is strong, sturdy and really at his prime, perfect for those wanting a loving, low-maintenance companion. His family had to give him up because of foreclosure, and he grieved for them, but is recovering nicely and ready to meet YOU! Will you give him the forever home he deserves?

Zeke is being fostered in San Francisco for Longdogs Rescue, a Sacramento-based doxie rescue.  If you are interested in giving Zeke a good home, please contact his foster mom Clara at clara@claradey.org or call her at 415-337-0115.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Zeke is $150.00.

Reunited with Lost Owners!

Name: Kayley
Age: 8 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 10 lbs.

We don’t understand how Kayley came to be labeled a “stray” at the shelter—she is completely blind!  How many blind “stray” doxies do you know?  We don’t know any. It’s more likely that Kayley’s people took her to the shelter and said she was a stray so they wouldn’t look like bad guys for dumping her in a strange, loud, scary place. Shame on them. But their loss is our gain: Kayley is as adorable and sweet as they come, with a funny, feisty personality. A happy little princess, she adores people and gives millions of sweet kisses. She wants nothing more than find someone who will love her and care for her the rest of her life.

Kayley might be 100% blind, but she gets around like a sighted dog, seldom bumping into anything, quickly learning the layout of her environment and walking in a straight line. Her foster dad is unconvinced she’s blind, that’s how well she gets around. Kayley is one smart girl. She’s even learning how to use the steps up to the couch. She seems to be totally house trained, and although the doggie door is a little scary to her right now, she’ll have it mastered in no time. Believe it or not, Kayley loves to go for walks! Snap on her leash and she's up for it, enjoying sniffing the smells and greeting all the new dogs and people she encounters.  What a little treasure she is!

Kayley is a talker; when she wants to find her people, she’ll bark until they make a noise to let her know where they are. We’re teaching her how to wait in a crate while her people are out and about, but she really needs to live with someone who is home much of the time. She also insists on sleeping in the big bed, burrowed under the covers. She gets along well with other dogs, but isn’t dependent on them. She’s a people dog and enjoys following her person around all day and curling up for a nap right next to their feet—or on their lap! She’s fine with cats, and she would be okay with gentle, respectful kids older than eight years old.

Spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, Kayley is ready for her forever home. If you can provide a good home for Kayley, please contact Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

On April 16, 2009, we received a phone call from a couple in Riverside CA identifying Kayley as their lost doxie girl, Trixie.  Subsequent phone calls were made and ownership was verified.  Kayley/Trixie was formally reunited with her family.  She was apparently taken from their yard and dumped in a Los Angeles shelter over 50 miles away.  Everyone was delighted to see Kayley/Trixie have a happy ending to her story.

Name: Baxter
Age: 8 Years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 8 lbs.

Baxter is the cutest thing on four legs. Just look at him sitting pretty! We think his white paws, face and “scarf” are just adorable. We don’t know why he was left at the shelter, but we suspect his former owners couldn’t afford to take care of his dental needs. Boy, were his teeth stinky! We sent him to the doggie dentist right away, and now his kisses are sweet as can be.

We think Baxter is just about perfect. He loves meeting new people and greets everyone he meets with a wagging tail and lots of kisses. He’s ready for any adventure, whether it’s a ride in the car or a walk around the neighborhood. He really enjoys life. He loves to explore the yard and sunbathe, and although he doesn’t play with toys or other dogs, he’s frisky and silly.

Because he was abandoned in the shelter, he bonds quickly and deeply with the person(s) giving him love—his motto is, “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.” As a result, he hates being separated from his person and will become anxious and upset if left alone. He needs to be with someone who is home most of the time, ideally a retired person or couple who will adore him and give him the attention he so desperately needs. He must sleep in the big bed at night, and he doesn’t do well being crated. He would be fine with older children or grandchildren. He could be an only dog or have a doxie companion; all he cares about is being near his person. Best of all, he is perfectly housetrained and will go out the doggie door to do his business in the yard every time. We think Baxter is a great little doxie who will bring years of joy to anyone who adopts him.

Neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, Baxter is ready for his forever home. If you would like to meet Baxter, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Baxter is $150.00.

Name: Nena
Age: 4 months
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Micro Mini

Nena is an adorable “chuweenie” (a dachshund/chihuahua mix).  She was found stray and brought to a Central California shelter.  Efforts to locate her family were unsuccessful.  Shelter volunteers called Rescue in hopes that we could get Nena out of there before she got sick.  We were overjoyed and arranged a transport to a foster home in the Los Angeles area.

Nena has been in rescue for a little over two weeks.  She has been spayed, received her all her vaccines, and has been microchipped.  She is an absolute joy.  Her foster mom reports:  Nena is a very sweet, playful and energetic puppy.  She gets along well with children, other dogs and cats.  She is so happy and wants to play.  She loves to be held.  She stands on her hind legs and dances with her front paws in the air to get attention.  She loves giving kisses and snuggling.  She is working on becoming reliably potty trained.

Applicants need the following qualifications:

bullet

Someone at home most of the day, stay-at-home moms and folks who work from home would be ideal.

bullet

Previous dachshund experience is a plus but not essential.

bullet

Another young dachshund for play and companionship.

bullet

A very secure INDOOR place for the puppy to be when no one is at home.

bullet

Applicants must be between 25 and 65 years of age.

bullet

No infants or toddlers, please, but we will consider families with children over five years old.

If you are interested in Nena, please fill out an application and contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.

The adoption fee for Nena is $300.00

Name: Jordan
Age: 3 Years
Color: Chocolate & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 9 lbs.

Jordan is as cute as they come—his picture doesn’t do him justice! His soft brown eyes and chocolaty nose beautifully match his silky chocolate-and-tan coat. His personality is as fantastic as his looks. He is utterly charming and sweet, and enchants everyone he meets. He loves to cuddle and give kisses, and he “sits pretty” whenever he thinks he might get a snack. He’s very talented!

A little diva, Jordan MUST sleep in the bed with his person, snuggled under the covers. He thinks baby gates are for sissies and will jump over one whenever he chooses. He’s not trying to escape, but to get to the big bed, so he can curl up for a nice nap. He loves to go for walks and rides in the car, and although he enjoys sunbathing and exploring the backyard, he would be fine in a condo or apartment, as long as he gets to go for walks on a regular basis. He is very devoted to his person and will follow him or her around all day, so Jordan would not do well in a home where his person was gone all day. He would make an excellent take-to-work dog. He’s a quiet dog, but he’ll bark if left alone.

Jordan has sensitive skin and needs to eat a fish-and-potato food, available in most pet supply stores, or he will break out in a rash. Otherwise, he is perfectly healthy. He gets along beautifully with other dogs and would like to have a doxie companion, preferably a girl doxie. He doesn’t seem to care about cats and would do fine in a home with dog-friendly kitties. He is house trained and knows how to use the dog door. We think he’d be okay with older children.

Neutered and current on his vaccinations, Jordan would love to meet his forever person. If you would like to meet him, please email Tamar at tamar@crankyeditor.com. An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Jordan is $250.00.

Name: Albert Einstein
Age: 5 years
Color: Red
Coat:  Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

When we rescued Albert from the Camarillo shelter, he was sick, obese, and paralyzed in his back legs.  It looked very bad for Albert.  Instead of having him treated for his medical needs, his owners had dumped him at the shelter and walked away.  He was scheduled to be euthanized.  We would not hear of it.  Albert had spunk, personality – a big personality – and best of all he could still wag his tail.

So he went home with us, and within a short time, with lots of TLC, medication, physical therapy, combined with a weight reducing diet, Albert was up and walking again  Albert not only walks quite well, he runs.  He runs out the dog-door, and down the ramp to his favorite potty spot in the back yard.  He has not only lost all the extra weight, he has regained use of his legs, and has full bladder and bowel control again.  He is 100% house trained.  Not many dachshunds in any condition can claim this attribute.

An extremely handsome boy, Albert is very loving and affectionate. He gets along well with other dogs, but he can be a little bossy. He would do best in a quiet home with a retired person or someone who works part time or from home.  Please, no young children for Albert.  It is not that he is not safe with children, but that they could re-injure him accidentally.  He would also very much enjoy having a mellow female dachshund for companionship.  He would not do well in an apartment or as an “only dog” unless someone is home much of the time.

Albert needs a home that is all on one level with no stairs and just a step or two that can be easily ramped to make it easy for him to navigate in and out the door.  He cannot do stairs at all.

Albert’s vaccines are up-to-date and he has recently had a full dental cleaning.  In our opinion, he is a treasure. If you are interested in Albert, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Albert is $200.00.

Name: Woody
Age: 4 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Standard – 20+ lbs.

After 4 years, Woody’s elderly owner dumped him at a Northern California shelter because he could not afford to give Woody the vet care he so desperately needed.  Shelter personnel took one look at the huge abscess on Woody’s left cheek and contacted Rescue immediately.  Woody needed medical attention badly.  He was in a lot of pain.  Within a few hours, transport was arranged and Woody came to Southern California and met with our vet at the Sunny Hills Animal Hospital in La Habra .  Woody was treated and sent him home to rest and recuperate.  The abscess was the result of bee sting, nothing life threatening.  After two weeks of TLC and antibiotics, the stitches are out, and Woody is healthy again, ready for a new home of his very own.

Woody is a fabulous doxie. He has a classic dachshund face which will take your breath away.  He is reliably house trained, crate trained, and a good eater.  Well, maybe too good of an eater.  It was obvious to us that he had been fed from the table as he refused to eat kibble even when mixed with rice and chicken.  But after missing a couple of meals, he realized that resistance was futile.  He now eats what is in his bowl, though with some reluctance, but he leaves it clean and shiny.  Woody is overweight, but he has already lost two pounds and has five more to go.  Woody should weigh about 20 pounds ideally.  Applicants must be willing to continue Woody's diet and exercise program.

Woody loves to go for leisurely walks and enjoys the socialization of all the other dachshunds in his foster home.  He would especially like a home with a little girl dachshund to have fun with.  He also prefers a quiet home without loud music and the chaos of kids running in and out. He is fine with visiting grandchildren over 5 years old.  He totally ignores the cats in his new foster home.   He prefers adults and children who are gentle and soft-spoken.  He has a kind and gentle soul.

Woody is current on his vaccines, microchipped, has had a dental cleaning, and is now very healthy.  If you can provide a good home for Woody, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Woody is $250.00.

Name: Princess
Age:  6 years
Color: Black and Tan
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini –9.5 lbs.

Princess was relinquished by her original owners, because their two pre-teen sons would tease Princess, often bordering on abuse.  The boys made Princess behave in a very defensive manner.  So their parents wisely turned Princess over to Rescue to find a more suitable and less stressful environment for her.

Princess is the beautiful Mona Lisa of dachshunds.  She even has burgundy, salon-like, highlights on her ears.  She is sweet, affectionate, and well behaved.  She is house trained and has learned the dog door.  She’s had very few potty accidents in her foster home.  She is also a happy, cute, wiggly girl who rolls on her back and wiggles around for belly rubs.  She is petite, playful and frisky.  She LOVES to play with her toys, especially her "baby".

In her quieter moments, Princess loves to be cuddled and is the consummate lap dog.  She also shamelessly flirts with her foster mom’s boyfriend.  She enjoys getting a bath and being brushed.  She loves going for walks, but needs to learn to focus on her walk not other dogs/people.  Her foster mom is working very hard on this with her.  She can be “territorial” when in the car, protecting her human from anyone who may approach the vehicle.  She should ride in a travel kennel until this behavior can be modified.  The same holds true if workmen or new people come into the home.  She will need to be on a leash until introductions are made and she settles down.

She gets along well with other dachshunds, but she can be jealous and is learning to share people-affection with other dogs.  She would be very happy to be a spoiled “only dog”.  Her foster mom has taught her to be tolerant of cats, and Princess has even been caught napping with the kitty.  She likes to snuggle under the covers in the big bed with her person.  Princess is the perfect companion for a retired person or someone who works from home who seeks the love and devotion this little dog is so willing to give.  Previous experience with a longhaired dachshund would be a plus, but not essential.  She would be fine with visiting, gentle older grandchildren.  No babies, toddlers, or kids under 16 years old.  She’s really had enough of those for a lifetime.

Princess is healthy and current on all vaccines.  If you are interested in Princess, please contact Dena at email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Princess is $175.00.

Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 10 lbs.

Name:  Chula
Ages: 7 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex:  Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 9 lbs.

Chulo and Chula are littermates.  Their names mean “handsome” and “pretty”.  We rescued them from the Stanislaus County shelter several weeks ago.  They were both very ill at the time.  Both had upper respiratory infections, were extremely malnourished, and had difficulty putting on weight.  It took a while, but both siblings are now healthy and ready for a home of their own.

These are very sweet, mischievous doxies.  Each one is a joy to hold and cuddle.  They give wonderful kisses. They are crate trained, and their house training is about 90%.  Given access to outside with a dog door, these two adorable doxies will go outside to potty most of the time.  They need a family willing to continue to take them outside on a schedule so they don’t backslide.  They need a home with a back yard.  They are not apartment/condo dogs.

Applicants must have previous dachshund experience and be willing to adopt both of these littermates together.  They are not good prospects to be left alone all day.  Actually, they can be escape artists and require a very secure home and yard.  Chula can dig under a stockade or chain-link fence easily.  Chulo thinks baby-gates are for sissies and can climb one in nothing flat.  They cannot be left to their own devices very long unless you know for certain there is no way they can get out into the street.

They are safe with children over 8 years old.  We don’t know if they are safe with cats, but most cats are bigger than they are anyway.  They both have had dental cleaning, been fully vaccinated, and have been microchipped.

Do you have room in your heart and home for both of these sweet babies?  If you can give Chulo and Chula an excellent home, please contact Dawn at  tbirdsc@pacbell.net. They are a bonded pair and we will not separate them.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Chulo and Chula is $300.00 for both.

Name: Murphy
Age: 5 years
Color: Black and Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Murphy was relinquished to a large-breed rescue group by someone who found him running in the street, almost getting himself hit by a car.  Efforts to locate his owners failed, so the other rescue group turned Murphy over to Dachshund Rescue to find him just the right home.

Murphy is very healthy and his vaccines are up-to-date.  He has had a dental cleaning and was also microchipped.  He is extremely social and really enjoys the company of female doxies.  He is well behaved and keeps his nose in his own dish at mealtimes.

Murphy is crate trained, house trained, and knows the dog door.  He has occasional accidents, mostly when a new male member joins the pack in his foster home.  Once the new dog settles in, Murphy returns to his good potty habits.  He is not an apartment dog.  He needs a dog door and access to a fenced yard.  The back yard fences must be secure and at least 4-5 ft. tall.  He likes going for brisk walks and car rides.  We don’t think he is cat-safe as he seems to have a strong prey-drive.  He is fine with children over 5 years old, no babies or toddlers.

If you can provide a good home for Murphy, please contact Dena via email or call (562) 694-6868.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Murphy is $200.00.

Name: Daisy Mae
Age: 3 years
Color: Black & Tan Dapple
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 19 lbs.

If you love the standard dapple dachshunds, you are going to fall head over heels for Flash and Daisy Mae.

Flash and Daisy Mae are victims of the economic melt-down in California .  They came from a family with six rambunctious children and an unemployed, disabled dad.  Conditions were stressful in their home to say the least.  Flash and Daisy Mae were very happy to be placed in a foster home to await adoption.  As a matter of fact, they blossomed from withdrawn, possessive, and defensive into two of the most loving, gentle, and affectionate dachshunds we’ve rescued.

Daisy Mae loves her stuffed animals to play with, and insists on sitting on your lap at every opportunity.  Flash is also very sweet, but has no interest in toys at this time. He loves to snoop in the yard and eagerly awaits his turn for pets, love and kisses.  They are very well socialized and make new friends easily.

They are both larger dogs, each weighing about 20 pounds. They have a hearty appetite, take their treats very gently, play nicely with the other foster dogs, are very loyal, and love to groom each other as well as the other foster dogs.  They are crate trained, reliably house trained, and dog-door savvy.  They walk well on a leash and are very good on car rides.

We are looking for a mature family with older children (over 12 years old). These two doxies have had enough babies and little kids to last a lifetime.  Working families are fine as Flash and Daisy Mae can keep each other company while the family is out and about.

Flash and Daisy Mae are very healthy. Their vaccines are up-to-date and they have been microchipped.  If you can provide a loving home for Flash and Daisy Mae, please contact Dawn at tbirdsc@pacbell.net.  An adoption application is required.

The adoption fee for Flash and Daisy Mae is $350.00 for both.
